I think a 530 might feel faster because it's louder.

I owned a 1995 540I for four years and traded for my GS430. The BMW had better handling, steering feel and seats. The reliability of the BMW was terrible. That was the main reason I switched.

Im not sure about the 530 being faster than a gs4, 540 yes, but 530 I dont think so at all. I have had a 2000 540i 6 speed, great car and faster than my GS4 that has some mods done to it. My friend has a 530 and there is no way that his car is faster than my GS, it doesnt feel faster, and isnt faster, we have had them side by side on numerous occasions. If I remember correctly the original post was asking about the 540. Having owned both here are my side by side comparisons.
Handling- the 540 takes it without a doubt, BMW's strong point
Speed- 540 is faster, the 6 spd is more spirited driving experience
Roominess- The GS has more leg room, etc, but both had ample amount of room for my needs. I came out of a Supra TT, so they both seemed like an Excursion to me.
Comfort- The GS is more comfortable
Luxery- The GS is more luxurious than the 540, BMW is a little sprtier looking inside. Mainly due to the seats, I had the M version seats and steering wheel.
Seats- The BMW seats are harder, stiffer leather, but have more of a sports feel, higher side bolsters, etc..
Modifications- GS is a little less expensive to mod, and has more readily available options than the Bimmer
PIMP Factor(looks)- My GS looks waaaay more nasty than my 540 did, although it still was stock and the GS is kittedup with some 20's(not a very fair comparison).
Personal choice- I personally love my GS much more than I did the 540, I wouldnt switch back if given the choice.

Thanks for the summary, however almost everything you just explained that is better on the 540i are things that have to be modded on a GS. I am sure there is always something to mod even on a 540i, but not as obvious and needed like on a GS4. BMW really knows what the customer wants in terms of sportiness (hence offerring sports packages on all their vehicles).
The 540 is a beautiful car, this debate on which one is better will go on forever (since it is a matter of preference), however we all do agree that the reliability of BMW in general is still poor for a luxury car maker, which is just wrong.
The best traits from Lexus and BMW, combined, would generatet the ultimate production car (luxury, sportiness, power......)

Magnussen Lexus on Auto Mall Parkway in Fremont is the one that is open 24 hours a day during the week and open Sat and Sun as well. According to the paperwork from my 8/15 service they are open the 24 hours during the week and close at 5PM on Saturday, I assume open from midnite. Sunday service hours are listed on the receipt as 7AM to 5PM. Last time I was in I noticed that they have DentPro work on cars so I asked if they could arrange to have a couple of small dents taken out while it was in. That was no problem and it actually turned out to be cheaper than taking the car in to DentPro separately and the car was still done ahead of schedule. They don't use synthetic oil so I buy the oil and have it in the trunk and they use my synthetic and credit back for it. My guess is they are probably at the high end for service rates, although I don't know that for sure, but the hours make it well worth it for me. Also, I have a closer Lexus dealer but it seems like you need at least a couple of weeks to schedule an appointment where Fremont Lexus can normally get you in within a day or two, if not an hour or two.

like bit said, encounter an unskilled 540 and you'll get him, not to mention rolling starts or who started gunning it first, yadda yadda. i'm sure its fun to beat a 540, but it won't happen consistently
