Default HELP!!! Steering Column Problem???

So I am one of those who occasionally likes to drive with the old knee, unfortunately a few days ago I started to notice that when I push up on my steering wheel it now actually moves up about a quarter inch. It is not just the steering wheel but that entire unit, the one that moves when you adjust the steering wheel to your liking. Even while the unit and steering wheel are in motion there is still that small amount of play in it that allows it to jerk up and down that small amount. It also of course moves when I am making full rotations with my steering wheel which is beginning to become difficult.

As always thank you to anyone who feels like giving advice...

it sounds like the bolts securing it the steering assembly (under the dash came loose) get under the dash and look/feel for it

check here post # 8 https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sus...ering-ecu.html this should give u a idea and if u wanna search for the other thread i refer to in that thread by all mean go for it. im fixing to leave work or i would link it (if i could find it)

Sakataj thanks for your help on all 3 threads, you are clearly quite knowledgeable. I will post a step by step tutorial of troubleshooting this in case anyone else sees it again. 183K is high mileage so it might be a rare issue.

Good luck with haggling and remember laughing at ridiculous offers is a deterrent so keep it up!

I just bought a '00 GS400 last week and notice mine does this too. The steering wheel moves up slightly if kneed after it lowers into position. Could be 'play' in the retracting mechanism maybe. I haven't looked into it yet. Still getting used to the car but curious if af1c331 has found anything.

From the stationary position if you turn your wheel 90 degrees to the left and right you will see 2 screw revealed that both need to be taken out. The final screw is underneath the steering wheel in plain sight. Once these are out tighten the bolt shown in the picture to stop your steering wheel from shimmying around.
