Question GS300 overfill oil to 6 quarts

Hi,

My mechanic went on vacation so i was passing by my old mechanic. Stopped by his shop... one of his guys... filled 6 quarts into my GS300.

I asked him... "Did you use all 6 quarts?"

Grease Monkey - Yes, it takes 6.

Me - No, it does not take all 6 quarts.

Grease Monkey. It takes 6.

I let the engine run. Waited like 30 seconds to measure the dip stick. It looks just very slightly... can't really tell it is much over mark.

But inside of me, i've always been using at about 5.75 because spec is 5.7.

Question - should i be worried that it is 0.3 quarts over?

That mech doesn't know what he's talking about. You should write a review for him on Yelp.

You'll be fine. I actually dumped all 6 quarts into my engine and when I went to read the dipstick, it only registered to the halfway mark. Now that might be a problem.

Maybe he used the larger oil filter which would allow for more oil.

i used OEM toyota V6 oil filter. Toyota dealer said it would fit GS300 but did not indicate if the car would take more oil. I would assume it should be very similar with marginal differences in size.

I'd think the evidence on the dip stick would be all you'd need. No need to worry.

The 2GS 3.0L does take 5.7 quartz with filter. Doing 6 quartz is overfilled, but I doubt there would be any critical damage. You should be fine.

On the side note, usually lube tech gets lazy and rounds it to the nearest quartz.

The point is that it only needs to take .3 quarts. Since the tech poured the remaining .3 quarts of my mobile 1 synthetic into the engine, i basically wasted $2.00 because each bottle cost me $7.00.

I will never bring it to that shop again.

Thanks all. I will ride on this until my next oil change.

If in doubt, only hand them 5 quarts and top off your self later.

According to the manual, this engine is made to burn a little oil between changes (though it never says how much) the extra would just be insurance. The difference in volume between the two will NOT be enough to cause interference or have the lobes of the crank splash into the oil and cause any windage losses or anything of that type. You're perfectly fine...

Its your car do as you wish. But don talk crap about a mechanic if you are asking if .3 qts will harm a motor. Engine oil does burn a bit with time. You dont know much about engines so be more careful about passing judgement.

I really hope you're not really upset about "wasting $2.00"...
