There a two cables which you have to hold in the alternator, one of them have a metal thing which you have to bolt down with the front lower bolt, the other cable goes at the back with a nut and then there is the plug that goes in the back too. Hope it helps.

1999 GS400 Alternator Replacement
I just did this job. In succinct detail, you can do the following which worked for me:
1) Remove plastic splash pan from underneath the car. Of course you must jack up the front end; please use jackstands! Unhook positive lead from battery.
2) Drain the radiator, remove lower hose.
3) Unbolt the fan assembly/shroud--I was able to just hoist it (pull it up) in place without completely removing to allow for ultimate removal of the alternator.
4) Remove fan belt.
5) The pulley on the power steering unit must be removed. Lefty-loosey! The nut will be on tight, primarily because loctite is used. The pulley has gaps; use a strong bar for a brace (be careful not to bend or pinch anything) and using a good socket/breaker bar (I want to say it is 13mm but don't remember for sure. Figure it out!).
6) NOW you are ready to pull the alternator. The top is a stud/screw and the lower is a bolt. Recommend unscrewing both but allow the top of the alternator to hinge on the upper stud post.
7) With the alternator in place, remove the two harness supports (very small screws, not easy).
8) Remove alternator wiring boot and pull socket--there is a plastic release. It wasn't easy. Remove boot/power lead on stud. I needed ALOT of light to get this done.
9) After all this, I was able to bring the alternator over the steering mechanics, bringing it all the way to the radiator and dropping it down.
--Forturnately for me, I was able to have my alternator rebuilt at Brodings Battery in La Mesa, CA for $120. Much cheaper than purchasing a rebuilt from ANYWHERE. ALSO, after removal of the alternator, it is a good idea to inspect to ensure that there are no leaks coming from the steering unit which is right above the alternator--I've read this is a primary cause for alternator failure. If there is a problem, you are ready to do that job as well.
Once you have secured a new alternator, just reverse the above directions. GOOD LUCK!
