Default GS300 odometer miles - saved in ECU or cluster?

So I just recently picked up a gs300 from a member on a few online forums. The day before the deal was done he said that the factory odometer had quit working and that he would put in a temporary cluster till the he could get the other one fixed. He claimed the car had around 150k on it and the current odometer reads 199,000. So guys is this guy trying to pull a quick one on me?

Ive searched and really couldnt find a clear answer. Most of my findings were dated back as far as 2004/05. Looking for current experiences with these clusters.

The odometer is saved within the specific cluster. Basically I found this out the hard way. When I first got my car I drove it home, changed out ball joints, etc. Then I started taking it to work here and there. One day the speedo just quit working so I figured the cluster went bad. So I bought another one from a wrecker -- when I got it the cluster had like 398,000 miles. I was like holy **** batman. So I contated the wrecker and he informed me that the mileage are specific to each cluster and swapping a new cluster won't retain the same mileage.

The true mileage is recorded within the ecu and you can pull that with whatever prog toyota uses to reflash the ecu to verify the 100% true mileage.

If you want to verify your mileage go to your states dmv site and there should be a car lookup by vin etc. This would give you the last time and the most recent time that the cars mileage has been recorded.

Thanks guys... Cooling me down about the whole situation. The car purchase has slowly become a mess.
