Traction control took over the car
I had recently driven to an outing and was ready to park the car. The “parking lot” was basically a giant gravel pit. As I was directed to park at a specific spot, I approached it very slowly (probably about 10 mph, if not less). When the guy gave me the hand signal to stop, I stepped on the brakes (not really hard) but the car lunged forwarded and almost hit the car in front of me. I could feel the ABS working and hear the rear wheels spinning. From what I gathered, this sounded like the traction control detected a slip of the wheel and took over. But I didn’t expect the car to lunge forward like this. It was not a pleasant feeling when the car is no longer in my control. Has this happened to anyone else?

I've done that once before.
There should be no lunging (a word?) when applying the brakes, unless you were traveling faster than you thought, and slid on the gravel.
Just a thought.

you may braked on on a spot of water or oil in the parking lot. that is why the car suddenly pull forward when you put on your brake.
ie lost traction in this case, abs will counter balance the effect by pumping the brake, (you should feel pulsing back and forth while sliding)
there are plenty of engine oil leaked by car in the parking lot, thus, if it's wet, you have to drive slow anyway.

Thanks for the replies.
The ABS was definitely working since I felt the brakes pumping. The strange thing is that the car was coming to almost a complete stop after I first applied the brakes but about 2 seconds later, the ABS kicked in and the car lunged forward. Maybe I did hit a slick spot on the ground.
