Difficulty installing tires on factory 17's?
I have some factory 5 spoke 17" GS400 wheels. I went to get my tires replaced at Discount Tire. They were able to install two tires on the wheel, but could not do the other two. They said it was difficult because of the design of the inside of the wheel. Has anyone encountered this before?

Discount Tire warranty's their installation for the life of the tire. If there is rust on the inside of the rim (someone used fix-a-flat etc.) they may tell you this. Visually inspect your rim to see if it is out of round. They can install with no problems, they've done it on Thousands of Lexus vehicles before. If you have the Chrome 400 rims, they may not want to scratch/chip the chrome if it is messed up inside the lip of the rim. Check it out and if they are flaky you may want to take your baby to another shop. I have not had any problems with discount tire - they have woked on all my vehicles without any issues for years, and they always have done a great job for me but YMMV.

I want to partially take back my statement above - I just put new tires on my stockers just 4 days ago, and developed a WICKED shimmy, took it back to discount tire and they had to rebalance them - they stated that the lexus OEM wheels require a significant amount of lube to properly bead the tires and that caused the tires to spin on the wheel under acceleration or hard braking.
They rebalanced all 4 and the car rides great... the point is they confirmed what you heard, I didn't look at the wheel but it may have a weird step lip or something? Also the chrome on my wheels is flaking inside which they said leads to leaking eventually...

Are they explaining to you what kind of problems they are having? Is the problem actually getting the tire mounted to the wheel, getting the beads to seat or do the tires not properly hold air. I've mounted hundreds of tires on stock GS wheels and dont remember having problems like that. Are the tires new?

Never had a problem mounting tires on my GS400 wheels.
I did have another problem... I was constantly losing pressure on all wheels. Tires were fine. The wheels on the other hand were in bad shape, paint was damaged and bubbling everywhere. So I had them sandblasted and powdercoated. Now the problem is gone.

for the stock 17s, there are these run channels right at the beed line (the one that tells u basically if the wheel is reverse mount or not). the stock wheels are regular, non reverse mount.
the funny thing is u kinda need the older style wheel mounter, not so much getting the tire on the wheel, but where it has air injectors at the bottom.
they can get around this with just a beed blaster, ones used for floppy truck tires, and if u plan on running stretched wheels.
