Default low fuel light= how many miles?

I cant find any information anywhere telling me how many gallons left when the light comes on for my 99 GS300. How many miles or gallons you guys think? I was thinking b/w 2-3 gallons. Anyone know for sure? Thanks.

Well if tank capacity is almost 20 gallons, i usually fill up at the light and top off at 14.5 gallons. So i assumed that it would be maybe 5 gallons. Correct me if i'm wrong ;p

Reserve is only supposed to be 2-2.5 gallons. On a 19.5 gallon tank like we have I've filled up when the tank was completely empty (Nav showed I had 0 miles left) but when i filled up I only topped off at 17.9 Gallons.

I've never pushed it beyond that, I was actually worried that I was going to run out of gas at that point.

Besides, like GS4_Fiend mentioned, it's bad for the fuel pump if you let your tank run empty all the time.

Default Over the years, I have confirmed that 80 miles.....

....is a very safe cushion after seeing my "low fuel light" illuminate. Even when filling up after these 80 miles, I have at least a gallon plus left.

I've got an 01 GS430....just passed 200,000 miles last month. Still love it.

best

I've gone three days after the light. 44 miles round trip commute so around 120 miles. Way to scared to try and push it further, the needle was buried in the E lol

You have a decent amount of gas left but its not good practice to make a habit of running it down much further than that.

from what i know its healthy to let it run dry once ina while to prevent the dirt from the gas and tank to build up, then again i heard this from my filipino uncles and we all know filipinos and theyre sayings...

Its actually the opposite, you dont want it to run dry because moisture cam build up in there

What is the impact on the fuel pump and the cats by running low?

Fuel pump needs gasoline to lubricate and cool down the pump. So if your out, your gonna overheat the pump. I dont think it's gonna affect the cat.

Oh ok I see, thanks. But for this to happen, you really need to run dry, i.e. till the motor stalls? I suppose the pump is lubricated as long as it's pumping.

Yeah, I don't see anything happen to the cats by running low. Was just curious.
