Alexus,

Just look at the link in the post I put up last week to Dex's DIY writeup. You responded to that post.

Here's the post

And here's a direct link to the DIY.

first of all ain't no one told me that i need to buy a new bulbs heh apparantly they are different from 98 to 01+.. only one bulb is needs to be replaced.. a reverse light..

however.. it might come w/ bulbs from dealer.. for some reason one of the light had all bulbs and other one didn't .. weird

and another thing.. for some reason after i put those new tail lights inside of my car a little light came on my dash about that some of the light went out .. i went to see outside all lights were working properly.. i'm like ... weird gotta ask on the cl .. but it went away.. so its ok now..

Alexus,

I'm assuming you ran into those problems because you bought them used? Didn't run into either of those problems when Dex & I replaced mine. New lights come with all the bulbs and the connecting harness if you get them from the dealer.

jks, check the CL classifieds or call one of our ClubLexus vendor sponsors that offer discounts to CL members. Here are a couple:

I read your orginal thread on this. Lexus (dealership) told me that the tasks you did could not be done. They said the wiring was different for the tail lights from 00 vs 01. I tried ordering the chrome bezel and was told those won't interchange either. How hard was it to change the bezel? I really hate the black one.

On the tail lights, they're wrong... the exact same wiring clip (see pic below) is on both lights, and this is the only wiring that you have to do. Just push the pig tail through hole until that little grommet comes through and plug in. Maybe if you were to wire all the individual wires up it would be different, but if you get the lights new with the clip it plugs right in.

On the bezel, they're partially right. See pics in the prior thread that show the difference in the connector clips underneath the bezel. The chrome ones don't fit on quite as tight as the original, but IMO are still acceptible. I don't think, however, you should look to your local dealer as the source for these - the part has been discontinued... I was lucky enough to get one of the last in the free world. Check the classified section here as there are a couple of efforts to get some of the 98-00 bezels chromed.

Changing it wasn't too bad, need a couple of small screwdrivers (put a paper towel around them so you don't scratch the finish) to pry the old one off.

Dude, it's totally plug & play. The dealership is wrong.

Wait a sec.......

Did they (the dealership) say 00 to 01 exactly? Both Dave's and mine were 98 to 01, but I can't imagine them changing the identical wiring setups for the exact same taillight housing from 98-01.

Check out my site for a write up, http://www.digitalsimple.com/2001%20...Swap%20Out.htm the same one Dave linked to before. If I come off as drilling this in, good. Its been discussed here at length.

It's totally plug & play people!!!!!!!

It actually could be some minor changes in the 2000 models. I posted up a thread about differences between the 98,99 compared to the 00's. The only diference is thatthe 2000 has SEVEN brakelights lighting up and the 98 and 99 only have FIVE. I'm not sure if different wiring come into play but thats pretty much the only difference.

Very good point there Dieselman... Mine's a 98. If anyone with an 00 has done the taillight swap please post here so we know it works . It'd be a shame if you couldn't swap 'em on an '00, they sure look great - I'm a fan!

Lightbulb OK

Eh guys. I did the 01' Tail Lenses Swap out on my previous Y2K GS400. Completely Plug & Play. Clean change out no differences at all. The connectors are exactly the same. Hey Alexus Why didn't ya get the O2 Tail lenses from me dude. I see you couldn't wait! Well that's OK.

Remeber people PLUG & PLAY. 2 - 10mm nuts w/rachet wrench outside & 2 on the inside. 10 MIN. swap out 30 min. If you're gonna clean out the area after you take out the old ones.

Paul - formally PAULGS400

edit: Hey Paul; hope you don't mind. I wanted to make perfectly clear what you were saying.

Thanks for the input everyone. I just got my 00 GS3. I used to have a 98 but it got total when I was rear-ended (at 50 + MPH) while stopped at a traffic light, so I was away for awhile. It was actually my 98 that I inquired the dealer about swapping the rear lights. Since the lights on the 98 look identical to the 00, I asumed (probably incorrectly) that they were the same. I need to read through some of the old threads to catch up. I think I would like to swap out the rears for 01 style though. Is there a good place to buy them besides the dealer?
