Default Gas cap

I took my car to get serviced the other day and the mechanic said I should get a new gas cap. My check engine light was on, and he says that it may have something to do with that. Also, I noticed my car burning gas faster than normal. Any thought in Club Lexus land???

Well, the mechanic said I do need a gas cap from when he got the code. It was hard to understand him as his English was not very good. I'll try another guy to give me the code and see what his opinion is. Thanks for the reply.

You probably have a code indicating an EVAP leak. The gas cap being on loose or leaking is a pretty common cause for this. He may have actually tested it for you or just be assuming its the cause. If you have an aftermarket locking type that may be why he is making the assumption since these tend to fail and cause this issue.

If he is guessing he may be wrong but a gas cap is a pretty cheap fix to try.

Get a gas cap if he says thats what the code is for. Sometimes CEL codes link into multiple things and you have to start somewhere...

You know what's weird? I want to the dealer about a month ago and when I got my car back I too had a check engine light and they said I needed a new gas cap. I still need to go out and get one I've just been feeling lazy.
