Default Gave her a face lift... (Plasti Dip DIY)

I've really gotten back into enjoy this car of late. A few weeks back I told myself that if I cant sell it I'm going to enjoy it. A couple days ago I posted a thread regarding the installation of some new DEPO taillights. It can be seen here: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-...-rear-end.html

Last night, I took the time to Plasti Dip my 10th Anniversary grill. It had been taken over by rock and sand chips. It either needed to be replaced or re-done. I decided to give the Plasti Dip products a try.

For those interested I purchased the materials from http://www.dipyourcar.com. There were a few hiccups with the transaction but, overall it went well and I'm happy with the product and their service. I would have opted to just go to Home Depot to purchase it but, they do not sell the Glossifier product there.

So lets get started... Here is what you'll need to complete this project. Nail polish remover (something to clean surface), cotton pads, Plasti Dip and Glossifier

First start by removing the grill from the car. Here is what my grill looked like.

Then proceed to cleaning the grill. Be thorough and let it dry COMPLETELY before beginning to spray.

[IMG][/IMG]

Now begin "Dipping" your grill. You'll want to do 4 to 5 coats. Be sure to do the initial coat lightly. It won't look great after the first coat but, that's ok. It will turn out fine. I waited 30 minutes in between coats, looking back I probably could have waited closer to 20 minutes. Initial coat...

Coat 3...

Coat 4...

Now it's time to use the glossifier product. If you are looking for the matte black finish STOP NOW. Plasti Dip dries to a matte finish. I opted to use the glossifier to give it more of a "gloss" finish. Now for those of you expecting it to look like black pearl or the original 10th anniversary black chrome grill, this is not going to happen. The glossifier gives a sheen type of look to whatever it's sprayed on.

I went through the same process with the glossifier. I sprayed 3 coats and waited 30 minutes in between each coat. It says to let the item sit for 8 hours before use. By use I'm assuming they mean driving. So I let it sit overnight. When I came out this morning this is what it looked like.

And here it is installed.

Overall the product goes on very easily. If you don't like the results you can simply remove it. I have not done this yet but, from what I've read it is simple to remove. The more coats you spray on the easier it comes off.

How many coats of glossifier did you use?

It still looks matte...

I used 3 coats. Like I said, it will not be a black chrome finish, it will have a "sheen" to it. I'll post pictures from another angle in the sunlight this afternoon.

looks good, like a satin or semi-gloss finish.

Usually i like when people do this, but on your car i don't think it matches right. The black chrome SD grill would set it off nicely. Just my $.02....
