get a mono sub amp with enough RMS watts to power whatever sub you are using. Then you need an amp kit (power, ground, amp turn-on, fuse block), 2 channel RCAs, good 10 or 12gauge speaker wire. you are better off looking at new subs.

No an aftermarket head wont work with the factory amp or sub, you must bypass it completely. I did my own by creating a harness and running it straight to the speaker wires after disconnecting them from the amp. Theres a couple step by step write ups in the DIY sticky thread.

You need to get an open air subwoofer if you are going to replace the stock one in the same location. I didnt want something blaring , just want it to sound good with a bit of thump, soooo I took out the stock cd player and amp and put a one of those small from china amps off of ebay. It was like $15 or $18 including shipping! it fit right in the area where the cd player cartridge was so it looks nice and clean.
Before you say anything, it was just an experiment, after seeing what these little things can do on youtube vids ... I said what the hell. It can shred up the stock one easily on a low setting. and it has about 50-75watts or so.
Now if you are an audiophile and want something that will vibrate the paint off your car, you will need a much better set up of course.
