Default Looking to buy a gs400 any helpful tips?

So I decided to get a gs400 after reading up on the forum, I dont want the gs300 since I wont be doing any major mods like boosting it and the mpg is basically the same. I will be doing mostly visual mods. And maybe do an intake with exhaust and headers. Who knows But anyway back to topic, I am looking to get 98-05 gs400. Does mileage really matter? I was considering buying up to around 150k miles as long as I have maintenance records to see. I will be changing out the lower arm bushings and shocks when I drop it regardless. Anything else I should need a heads up on? Any tips would be helpful. What year should I aim to get, list of replacement parts to check for, etc? Also, can I have an estimate of avg prices with year and mileage? Im a college student and prob be willing to fork out 7-8k max! the cheaper the better.

I bought my gs400 with 158k miles and no problems. Engine runs great, and runs even smoother than my 99k gs300 haha. A cool think about gs300 is that its easier to swap a faster motor and cheaper to buy a replacement motor if the current one fails

Yeah, thats good to hear. the 1uz and 1jz are pretty durable engines. My dad used to have a ls400 so im familiar a little with the 1uz. But if the gs300 and gs400 have same body shouldnt the gs400 be able to swap for example a 2jzgte the same as the gs300 besides wiring the harness part?

I personally would get a Gs300 (I have an 03 now). Easier too mod (swap engines, done).

And cheaper parts for engine stuffs......

Then again there is no real difference other than the engine.....

My gs300 is for sale if you're interested

I know what you mean but Im not going to be doing any performance mods. So id rather get a gs400 for reliability if left stock and the extra horses for when im in a rush. But honestly I wouldnt mind getting a gs300 as long as it is for the right price. Whats the details on your car and price?

Its pretty much a 9.5 inside. An 7.5 outside. Silver on black leather, fully loaded everything works.

Has busted front struts but going to put Megan racing coilovers on it.

275k miles, do not let this fool you. From the dealer I got it from (Chi-town) all the way to Charleston, SC. Not a single issue. Oil is holding at same level. Tranny shifts like day 1.

Its a freak of nature I tell you......I would only sell it if I can get 7k for it that is with the coilovers.

I have a crap load of pics if you want me to post them. If I do not sell it, its quite ok. As I always have what I own for sale

thanks

I will kindly have to decline your offer. And I just thought about the trip back home (louisiana) too dang far lol. I just recently looked at a gs300 just to get a feel for it. 00 with 159k miles and it was 1 owner for 5.8k which is pretty cheap but the exterior needed some work. I am the same as you on everything for sale. Anything is for sale as long as the price is right

I have a 98 GS400 with 266k miles and its honestly theee quietest, smoothest, strongest, most reliable and beautiful car ive owned, starts up without any hesitation, idles like its not even running, takes off like a bat outta hell, and shifts so smooth you can barely feel it. the ride is solid and feels like a 1 year old car, and today i drove with the radio off at 70mph and it was so quiet inside the cabin, Lexus is truely a Quality made product, its on the original engine and tranny, not a spot of rust.. pearl white paint is still beautiful as ever and the interior has held up very nicely over the years. if i were to ever recommend a car to anyone it would definately be a Lexus not even my BMWs with 130k miles on it were ever this nice and even my 02 E430 Benz doesnt stand a chance to this car. But i would highly recommend the V8 and i tastefully modded mine with the insurance LED tail lights, Infiniti G35 sport wheels, and a new set of OEM xenon bulbs, i also got rid of the yellow fog inserts, only other thing i did was tint the windows 20% all around

That is exactly what I wanted to hear. I cant wait to get mine. I am planning to do some mods such as led tails, ls430 retrofit, 19 in staggered rims, tint, tte lip if i can find one or tte rep, and a little other things. My dad used to have a ls400 and the engine was so smooth and quiet, I loved it. Would you mind posting a pic of your car? sound very nice.

'98 GS400 with 209k and the worst problem I had (other than pushing the "low fuel" indicator a bit further than I should - lol) was a $100 sensor that took 15 min to replace. No engine mods. I tell my wife that my lexus will probably outlast her 2010 BMW. I really should do something special for my lex. I could drive her to california and back right now with no hesitation if I had to. Great car. You won't be disappointed.

For the record....

98-2000 = GS400
2001-2005 = GS430

The 98-2000 GS400 is extremely affordable these days. So affordable, a college student can buy one....

good luck

Another BandWagon statement. Beside the few people who have done this, how many members, mainly newbs have done this? Have you swapped out ur engine? Is your car FI?

If you look at the overall posts on the forums you will see most pertain to how to change a light bulb, exhaust and 22s. If you didnt know the GS is limited by the tranny, unless you go all out and do a tranny swap as well. So how many people are going to do this? Given that this is not cheap and in some cases may pass the current value of your car.

"cheaper parts for engine stuffs" WTF does this even mean?

The GS3 is a car for those who
A. looking to NA-T as more parts are readily available for the 2J ( NO BS EGAY SLAP ON KIT)
b. Dont care about power and looking for a daily that looks great
c. Want to tell everyone and their mother that their car has a 2J

Other than that the GS3 is a SLUG, and you will soon realize the power gained with bolt ons is nothing compared to what a GS4 will get you with/without bolt ons.

Why are u selling your GS3? to get a GS4?

I dont know how I never noticed that. Thanks a bunch. Quick question, is the gs430 mpg close to the gs300? Because from what I read the gs400 is very close if not identical to gs300 mpg. I do not know about the gs430 though. If it is worse then I will stick with the gs400. Thanks

1) Just because someone makes a thread about changing a light bulb, does not mean one cannot go to a speed shop to swap engines. You're assuming everyone here does their work.....

2) Engine stuffs, as in parts.....to replace.....

3) I do not have an engine swap nor FI. If I wanted to yes I could right now, I have owned many cars faster than 97% of the cars here. Don't care to get in a pissing contest, but to say the gs300 is a slouch, a turtle or whatever is just stupid. Its a ****ing 2jz engine man.......its the engine that allows the street kings to be a car from the early 90's.......not many current tech cars can keep up with supras......

Also, I am selling it because everything I have is for sale. My last car was an 03 LS430 blk/blk UL package.....just wanted to try something different.

4) GS3 is a slug?
2000–2005
2000–2005 GS 430 (UZS161; Europe)
. The V8 engine also received a 0.3-liter bump in displacement and the model was renamed GS 430 (UZS161). Peak power was unchanged, but torque increased to 441 N·m (325 lb·ft). The GS 430 takes 5.3 seconds to do 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h).
The 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) time of the GS 400 prompted Lexus to claim that the GS was the world's fastest production sedan at its introduction in 1997.[3]
1999 Lexus GS 300 0-60 mph 7.5 Quarter mile 15.5
2002 Lexus GS 430 0-60 mph 5.7 Quarter mile 14.1

You're right, the 3.0 is a slug. And once a turbo is put on it, its just a slug with a snail
