Default Touching butterfly valve inside of throttle body = dead throttle?

So my mechanic told me I needed to buy a new throttle body because someone touched and manually moved the butterfly valve inside the throttle body.

He told me doing that caused the throttle to lose all its memory which is causing it to idle nonstop from 800-1500rpm. Is this true or is he just trying to get me to shell out more money to buy a new throttle body?

Me thinks he's full of it.

I've removed the intake hose from my TB and sprayed tb cleaner and manually moved the TB valve.

Sounds to me like he's trying to swindle you out of money.

I have also moved the TB valve several times to clean it out.

You could try the same. Maybe thats all it needs is a good cleaning.

If he is not a lexus/toyota mechanic he may just not understand how it works, and not be necessarily trying to screw you, maybe he just feels it's an easy way to fix the problem and he doesn't know how otherwise.

TPS adjustment procedure may be all that is needed, I have moved the butterfly manually on GE and GTE throttle bodies when cleaning them with no problems.

Newer cars have a electrical signal sent to the throttle body and moving it by hand will screw up the adjustment, but it doesn't need to be replaced. (Usually) Our "vintage" cars still have the throttle cable type movement and is not affected by manual movement.

How do you adjust the TPS? What is the procedure? It's self contained in the throttle body isn't it?

I just adjusted the tps the other day. the easiest way to me is to warm up the car to operating temp. have someone in the car and put it in drive. and someone outside adjusting the tps. its held on the throttle body with 2 screws, loosen it lightly like 1/8 of a turn. then adjust the tps till the rpm is at around 700rpm i think, kindof forgot wat rpm exactly and tighten up the screws. took me a few trys. anyone correct me if im wrong.

Our 'vintage' cars from 1998-2005 (1997 in Japan) are in fact drive-by-wire, it's just all contained in the throttle body. It's an earlier form of it that still incorporates a throttle cable though, but the cable does not directly open the butterfly completely, the huge throttle motor hanging off your TB is for moving the butterfly if you haven't looked at it closely before..

Unless you really forced it and broke the ears inside the the Tps you should be ok.
