I wouldn't be so quick to judge the starter without seeing it myself! I have posted a similar problem on my 2000 GS300 and I originally thought it was a classic starter solenoid problem as it didn't sound as if the engine was cranking. Then, I had my son crank the engine and I watched in amazement as the engine spun freely!! It sounded as though it wasn't cranking but I could clearly see the serp belt spinning! Then all of the sudden it will sputter and sound like it has compression and then start! Once it starts, it runs just fine and will start all day long like normal. Mostly after sitting for a while or all night, it does this again, but not always!! Sometimes I can crank it 10 times before it actually starts to sputter. IT IS NOT MY STARTER! So, have someone turn the key while you watch the serp belt. If the belt spins so is the engine! If you have a similar problem please post it and I'll do the same if I find the problem.

I have the same issue with my 1999 GS300. Brought it in and had the starter looked at (no problems there), but because I can't show anyone the problem once I start my car (and drive it to them), it remains a mystery. There are no issues with the battery and my car does start, eventually. Sometimes I have to wait 15 minutes or so and try again.

I'm guessing it has to do with fuel pressure. When my Fuel Gauge is under the 1/4 tank mark, my tank is actually almost empty. Could this be related? If so, what specifically might I need to do to fix it?
