Adding Navigation to a non Nav GS 300
I purchased the head unit from a guy for 250. I went and tried to install it and it would not work. Not even the A/C would come on. I want to know what i need to get this working the cheapest way.
I have see some brain/hard drive system but I am not sure if this is what I need.
Would i need something like the unit below with a hard drive or is there a better option??

It really is not realistic to switch a non nav. car to a nav car. There is much more to it than simply swapping the center unit. You would need to switch the wiring harness's and buy several other parts from Lexus. If you want nav, it is much cheaper and easier to pick up an aftermarket unit.

I know, but i want to keep the car as factory as possible. The sound system on this car sounds awesome stock and I know when you go with an after market unit the speakers don't work as well and the amps don't work at all. I already have the head unit and i am picking up a NAV brain where the hard drive goes. I am trying to find the connector plugs so I can make my own wiring harness.
There are still some things that I am unclear about because I am not familiar with the car.
I have also heard about a loop wiring harness someone made so you can use the head unit for radio and a/c without nav, but I have not found anything on that.

I have documented much of what has been asked in this thread here:
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/lex...m-upgrade.html
I did a nav to aftermarket, but the pics show the equipment, wiring harness and location of the the stock nav hardware.

After looking for an answer to this, I read multiple threads and posts about this all saying its hard/impossible/not worth it. I figured it can’t be that hard so after a night of reading circuit diagrams and tinkering with wiring I got it alive.
You need the headunit, nav ecu and cables (not mandatory, but will be very helpful).
I did not do any modification to the non nav car wiring, all is removable / not cut into the car wiring.

Nice! Nav antenna too, right? Strange as it may seem, I'd like to do this too (in addition to running an aftermarket HU). You're not in FL are ya?

Truly it's not worth the money to put in the stock Navi. It's not that good to begin with. It's basically 25 year old technology that wasn't that cutting edge when it came out.
The Navi screen in my GS400 is now hard to read because it so old and the touchscreen doesnt always pick up what I touch. I never actually use the Navi because the maps are hard to read. I would just rather have a normal radio and climate control because the button would actually be easier as it ages.

It depends on one’s use case. In my case, the screen is like brand new, and I had a junk car sitting outside to get the parts from. I could have gone with an aftermarket HU system, but I was not really into wiring the speakers, sub, and bypassing the stock amp, as I have no issues with the stock system’s sound quality at the moment. I also like the look of the stock unit more than a janky aftermarket one, but that’s just personal preference . Maybe next challenge could be getting the stock amp to work with an aftermarket HU .
