Engine selection for the 2004 GS
The all new AMG E55 from mercedes due in may will use the same design of shifting gears through buttons on the steering wheel.
This looks to be like a bad *** car that will leave us all in the dust. I just hope lexus is on the same page when they bring out the new GS4 as Audi RS 6, BMW M5, and MercedesE55 are all doing.
I am posting a poll to see what kind of engine the new lexus should be using.
Here are some stats on the new benz:
MERCEDES-BENZ E55 AMG
Vehicle type: front-engine, rear-wheel-drive, 5-passenger, 4-door sedan
Estimated base price: $75,000
Engine type: supercharged and intercooled SOHC 24-valve V-8, aluminum block and heads, Bosch Motronic ME2.8.1 engine-control system with port fuel injection
Displacement 332 cu in, 5439cc
Power (SAE net) 469 bhp @ 6100 rpm
Torque (SAE net) 516 lb-ft @ 2650 rpm
Transmission 5-speed automatic with lockup torque converte
Wheelbase 112.4 in
Length 190.9 in
Width 71.7 in
Height 50.9 in
Curb weight 3900 lb
C/D-estimated performance:
Zero to 60 mph 4.5 sec
Zero to 100 mph 10.5 sec
Standing 1/4-mile 12.4 sec

My vote is for the the supercharged V8. I think there will be too many long term issues with turbo charging and could prove to be a maintance headache for Lexus. I think a supercharged V8 would be perfect for the car so it can regain its title as the fastest production sport sedan in the world which it lost to the new M5, than to the audi RS 6 and now with the new mercedes E55.

Hey
The regular engine for the GS400 should be a 4L V8 Supercharged 450HP engine.
The sports version the GS470 should be a 4.7L Supercharged 500-550HP engine ( that engine can do this without even breathing hard ) with the option for a 6 speed manual or 6 speed auto with the button shift.
The Lexus engine can creat more HP than the Benz engine N/A or supercharged but the potential has never been realized! it is about time Lexus brings out the big guns and shows the car world what it is all about.

While I have LONG begged for lexus to enter the limited production, high-perfomance sedan arena, I disagree that they can have the standard GS4xx have 450horses. They will charge way too much for most people that were targeted withthis current generation.
I on th other hand will LOVE to see either of those optionsmentioned...again, a v8 supercharged. Now, I wouldlike to keep it naturally aspirated, however, I find it hard to believe lexus would spendthe R&D on that. It would be much easier to take the current block or others currently in devlopment andjust supercharge it to give us the power we need/want.

SUPERCHARGED V8 ENGINE FOR ME
Hello,
The supercharged V8 in my opinion would be the ultimate. I frown upon turbocharging, as it will creat problems of its' own. SIGN ME UP FOR THE SUPERCHARGED GS!

Hard Decision
I'm more between NA Engine if able to produce atleast 400HP or A Twin Turbo V8.. Remember If Lexus does a Turbo. It will be Perfect. Look at the Supra its the best Twin Turbo motor in the world besides the Skyline.
I would go with TWIN TURBO V8
because you can easily change boost pressure to what you need it to do.. Supercharge cars are usually set at a lower and fixed PSI level... Don't get me wrong I'll be the 1st in line for the AMG55 Supercharged or Audi Twin Turbo!!!
Its all Good..

Remember it says $75K BASE price on that E55. I doubt you'll be able to buy one much below $80K. That's a LOT more than the GS.
Would anyone here really pay $80K for a GS w/ 500HP?

Luxus should just set their focus on one great car. The BMW 5 series. If they want to bring a new higher performance GS onto the market and charge $80k for it, keep eyes on the M5.. That's it.. No sense in trying to watch what everyone is doing while everyone is simply watching what BWM is doing.. Mercedes is gone. Their cars are bad. I have three friends with three Mercedes. One is selling his and buying a Chrysler (not sure why - he may be going crazy) - the car broke down all the time (a brand new S600), another is selling his and buying a Lexus GS, and the other is debating on an M5... All complaints are about reliability...

Hey BiT
That is alot of money and getting way up there.. But it really depends on how the new GS would look and all the new options-like mercedes have that new trasponder 'keyless sytstem' cool as heck..ALL the technological advances in the GS maybe well worth it and At one time I was going to pay $90K for a 290HP Acura NSX..I consider a 500 HP Lexus GS a hell of a bargain and 4 doors too!

Lexus could match the E55 in performance but that is if they want to.
And the Supra 2JZ-GTE and the Skyline RB26DETT engines are turbocharged works of art! but in a performance luxury line Twin turbos ( or any turbo for that matter ) is not favourable, even Audi is getting rid of turbos in their S line of cars when the new generations come out.
ok how about this a N/A 400HP regular engine but the sports/performance version of it will be a 500HP Supercharged V8, with stiffer suspension, 19" rims, sticky tires, new aero package and sportier bucket seats.
