Unhappy First diff fluid change after 108K miles (nasty drain plug pic!)

First off, I'm not positive the diff fluid hasn't been changed in 108K miles. But I just bought this thing and the previous owner included pretty detailed records; pretty much everything except a diff fluid change. Judging by what I see, it surely was not done recently.

Anyway, as you may know the drain and fill plug bolts are magnetic on most vehicles. Here's the drain plug just after I removed it. Nasty!

Remember, if you're going to do this, always remove the fill plug first. I soaked mine with PB Blaster and gave it a couple good whacks with a hammer and they both busted free.

Doesn't seem THAT bad considering the mileage. It looks like the magnet did what it was supposed to.

And yeah, I was expecting a bit worse color-wise, but the metal flakes and sludge were pretty bad.

I changed mine a couple years ago. Filled her back up with Royal Purple.

Haven't had a chance yet funny enough. But later today I will. The good news is that I had no gear whine or clunking or anything so the change should be minimal.

164K?! Whoa! It's way easier than an oil change. Just go for it.

One thing I don't see anyone mention on searches is to replace the crush washers for the fill and drain plugs. They are there and they are NOT a standard size. FYI

I didn't replace mine, but I should have.

I used Amsoil 500K mi 75W-90 because I happen to have some (and Amsoil rocks!). I had to supplement with some off-the-shelf 75W-90 full synthetic because I only had a qt of Amsoil and my diff took about 1.6qts before it started leaking out the fill hole (that's when you know it's full).

Hope that helps!

Cool, thanks. Just was curious as I usually use Redline shock proof HD (no additives) for my other rides but they are all aftermarket LSD equipped (except my Audi w Haldex). Will be draining mine soon !

Yeah I been meaning to do my change. Ive just been lazy to be honest, lol, and it's really cold in Texas right now so i'm trying to keep any work to a minimal haha.

But yeah make sure you report back and let us know how she feels.
