I have a 99 ES300, when the previous owners got it back when it was new, they got it with the car phone but they removed it a while ago

That looks like an old AMPS unit, pre-GSM. As an example, the original iPhone (1st gen) can no longer be used in the US (ok, except for one small provider in the mid-west, they kept their towers up for a while), and didn't work in Japan when we visited, way back in... '08...?
Be nice to adapt one to GSM. It's the integration to the audio system that's cool... when driving, calls and radio audio interface... be nice to have the audio mute when a call comes in, then come back on when the call is ended.
Ok, you can do that with a tape-adapter when listening to podcasts, yet it's a dash-mess.
