Default Lexus GS vs the new 2004 BMW 5 Series

I am linking this thread to the "engine selection poll for the GS" to make a direct comparison between the GS and the new 5 series which already has the new engines options in place.

For pictures go to:
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...4&pagenumber=4

Just read that the new BMW 5 series will be offering the following engines:

Engines for Europe:
Diesel:
520d - 150HP
525d - 184HP
530d - 218HP
540d - 258HP
M5 (5.5L V10 with 500HP)

Gas:
520i - 170HP
525i - 192HP
530i - 231HP
535i - 272HP
545i - 333HP
M5 (5.5L V10 with 500HP)

2005 they'll get direct injection and VANOSIII engines.
A more easy to use I-drive system will be standard in all models, a six-gear-auto will be available, too.

I just hope the lexus engineers are reading this

sorry there is no diesel M5, my mistake. A lot of these engines will not cary to the USA. My guess is that only 3 gas options will be available here in the USA

535i - 272HP
545i - 333HP
M5 (5.5L V10 with 500HP)

The back of the new 5 looks so nasty. I can get used to the front and side profile since I'm already used to the new 7 but the back? Ugh! It looks like a friggin Tiburon from the back! Well, I guess it looks better than the first spy shot that was released a while back -- for those of you who have seen it. My .02

May be Chris Bangle, the chief designer for BMW will be the equivalizer (in 5XX vs GS). I think that Lexus will have no problem matching or beating the 545 power, but they won't challenge the M5.

The big question is: will people buy the controvercial styling of Chris Bangle's cars (flame surface concept)? The old BMW look is gone, it will be interesting to see whether the new one is accepted...., followed.

i agree with gangstar, bmw has screwed the new 3 series, the 7 series is controversal but it will make it, the 5 series is also going bad. the z4 isnt nice either, though its better than the 5 series. bmw better not change the m3 for another 3 years if they want to survive, cuz that is the last car they have left that still looks really nice. oh well, thats why we drive Lexus!

Pretty strong statement Henry, given that you're a designer type guy yourself !

well this is the way i see it. if you look at the design of the bimmer over the year, the e46 and the e39 generation (the current 3, 5, and the previous 7) when the came out they got tons of props from most people, it just looks so classy, yet sporty.

but when the current 7 came out..... you get very extreme comments..... and the z4, a lot of people not agreeing. and seeing the new 5 and the z6 pics, i surely don't feel anyhting at all (i still remeber when i first saw the current 5 i was stunt). and mind you, bmw DID hire the new current chief designer (always forgot his name) and i believe the new 7 is by him........

on the other hand, mb is definitely getting my attention. when the current new gen s class came out i gave it a thumb up (quality aside). and when i saw the new e class, i started to wonder if they hired the previous chief designer from bmw

I think you and I both agree (taste wise) that Mercedes is making some good styling decisions recently.

As far as BMW is concerned, they are definitely going to see some controversy over their recent designs. One part of me agrees that BMW needs to try something diffeent, the other part says woe, I didn't know they we're going to be "that" different.

The Z4, I like the front and part of the side, but hate the rear end.

I think the concept drawing of the next 6 series looks good, if they only stick with it in final version.

As far as firing the designer, you should probably hit up all the managment that signed off on the design for production, as well.

I gave up trying to load those pics. Took way too long.

Are they spy photos with all sorts of camoflage or are they sketches?

I only saw a sketch from the rear 3/4 view. Don't know what the front looks like.
