Default Replacing Motor Mounts - Lift from the top or from the pan?

Hi guys,

I just ordered replacement motor mounts and tranny mount from Sewell ($275 shipped). I've been getting a groaning/growling sound coming from the car when braking hard or when the car is sitting at idle on really steep hills.

I originally thought it was the brakes (so did my mechanic). He took off the brakes, cleaned them, sanded them, applied anti-squeal, and installed new clips/shims. No improvement.

So we will give the mounts a shot and see if it cures it.

When replacing the mounts, did you lift from the top or the from the pan/bottom? I've heard of people lifting from the pan but I've worried about denting it or destroying the gasket.

Is there an engine lifting hook that will allow the motor to be raised an inch or two from the top using a hoist?

Thanks.

You can lift the engine from the bottom. Simply use a wooden block to disperse the weight evenly.

you can do what ^ he said, or use a cherry picker (engine hoist)
