Default Malfunction Indicator Lamp. Please help.

First time Lexus owner, first post.

I bought a 1999 GS400 last month. I've been loving it. Had some work done (valve cover gasket and spark plug seals were replace, and a leaking power steering pump is being replaced this weekend).

Today when I got home I noticed the Malfunction Indicator Lamp was on. The manual says, aside from the gas tank not being screwed on right, it could be a problem with: engine electrical system, automatic transmission electrical system, or electronic throttle control system.

What is the most common cause of the lamp coming on? I have noticed a temporary 'whirring' or mechanical noise when I start up the car, and when I come to a stop. I'm going to take it to the mechanic this weekend, but if you have any advice/input until then I'd really appreciate it.

You have to be more specific as to what the code(s) is the mil giving?

The buzzing/whirring noise could be the brake master pump your hearing.
