Must I Change The Amplifier (2004 GS, Mark Levinson) or be Condemned to Silence
#16
excluesive - I'm in the UK when I'm driving a Lexus, if that makes sense.
Several have confirmed to me that the only difference between the 0W032 and the 0W210 is the door speaker to which the voice-assist is routed - if so, no problem, as I never use voice assist on navigation.
But what is puzzling is that voice-assist IS STILL working (it is the only sound I can get). Doesn't it use the power amp too? I'm worried that I'll order an amp and then find it wasn't the amp that was wrong in the first place.
Note the ASL soft-button is also missing from the Sound displays on the console (as are the green lines for base/treble and fade/balance settings), suggesting the console isn't talking to the amp.

my nav voice was still working. it is actually a separate channel and then feeds the front speaker.
i have a wiring diagram at home, you can PM me your email address and i'll try to get it over to you later.

excluesive - OK, that your nav voice was still working (i.e., like mine is, despite the other sounds all being dead) is reassuring. Whew. I'll PM you my email address, many thanks in advance for the wiring diagram!
RoninEng - Yes I did, thanks. Checked that fuse under the hood and also the dome and "Radio 2" fuses behind the passenger side kick panel.
Still don't understand why the amp failed (assuming, fingers crossed, it is the amp that's kaput). All I did was put a 12v 23Ah (i.e., small) jumper battery across the terminals of the fitted battery. Didn't get polarity wrong, no sparking, no nothing. Maybe the audio was on when I did this? I couldn't tell as the fitted battery was pretty flat.

The Nav does not need the amp to work. The amp only controls the sound output. I had it wired that way for a week. If you want I can send you a wiring schematic to show you. It's not like an Audi where the system is in a loop. One can work without the other. Except for the CD player, ha. Pm me of you want more info.

Hi all,
I'm the OP.
I bought an 0W030 amp from another member (message me if you need his email address, as he may have more). Changing amps was easy using a socket set (with extension) to un-bolt things. Upon replacement all the sound and controls immediately worked perfectly again.
So, I have a spare ML amp (part 86280-0W210 exactly equivalent to 86280-0W030, 86280-0W031 & 86280-0W032 except that the navigation voice is routed to a different speaker). I've opened the amp up; it is pristine inside. From a sticker inside, it was upgraded by Lexus in 2007 (when owned by the previous owner, who had all the car's servicing done by Lexus themselves), probably to fix the switching-on bug that plagued earlier versions of the amp.
If anyone has an idea how to repair it (as in, what is the likely faulty component) I'd be grateful. Or, if anyone wants to make me an offer on it, I'm willing to part with it for a song. All worked perfectly until I used a portable battery to boost-charge the car's battery.

Hmmm, I love my ML. Still going in my 2001. It's great for a factory system. I rate a 7 on my out of 10. I have heard some outstanding systems. At 46, I have pretty much heard them all. Love Audi top of the line system.

My sub is caput, is it possible to just get a new aftermarket sub or does it have to be the ml sub specifically in order the work with the factory ml sound systen. Pardon my ignorance I know absolutely nothing about sound systems. Any info is appreciated
