HI!
I've been out of the country and upon my return, my car now has 20,000 miles courtesy of my brother.
Anyway, I left the car at 10,000 and at 15,000 my bro got an oil change.
The dealer now says that I should've had intermediate service other than the oil change @ 15,000 and now want me to fork over $300 to do that service @ 20,000.
IS it worth it? Or should I just wait for the 30,000 mile major service.
What happens @ 20,000 (or even 15,000) service to warrant $300 anyway?
Ryan

Man dealers just try anf take your money.... Do not give them a dime. I know people with 1998-2002 gs's who never get services at the dealer and only go there for warranty work. As long as you get oil changes, you will be fine. The only other key things are the coolant service and tranny service. But, if you look atthe tanny dipstick, it states never change the fluid. Lexus can not void your warranty for not doing services from them. Why pay them 350 for inspections, rotate and balance, and an oil change when you can get the same thing up the street for $30. I know some of the head techs here in FL and they told me to my face they never inspect the vehicles. They have been told just to perform the oil changes, and make sure the car looks fine underneath. THEY NEVER inspect and tighten anything unless the customer complains about noises. SO BEWARE... I am not cheap, but I am a very smart business man. This is why I am where I am today.

PlayboyzGS,
While I can respect your views concerning servicing your vehicle. I DO believe that transmission servicing is pretty important. I see many GS-400/430 that have never had this fluid changed, and the fluid is black and smells burned. That CAN'T be too good for the transmission. In fact, when I was buying my GS, that was the first thing that I checked when I got to the car. Most people just check the engine oil. I have seen "certified" cars for sale that did not have this fluid changed. Most want to make the extra cash by having the car serviced after purchase. I made it part of my deal to have it serviced before buying it. I am currently on schedule to have it changed again every 15,000 miles. Anyone else have a different opinion or service interval? I do it myself, so I save the labor, and I will buy the fluid from a Toyota dealer instead of a Lexus dealer..(different price there). I buy it by the 1 gallon containers.
I for one, would not want to have a failure for not changing the fluid. On one hand I agree with you because some dealers say trans fluid change every 15,000 miles, and the book says every 30,000. Toyota Transmission fluid is not cheap, and like you, I don't want to overservice, but I DO want to preserve my transmission. I do not want to take this fluid to failure. Most of us run our cars..(some harder than others), and the transmission probably takes a beating. It would be interesting to see how many people have suffered a transmission failure in 1998-2002 GS cars...any takers?
Just my .02 cents
Thanks,

NVMYGS3 - If you have the Owner's Manual, look in there for the description of the items listed under certain mileage service intervals.
If not, get your VIN and log onto Lexus.com and register your vehicle, they'll send you a free Owner's Manual. You could also download/printout the Factory Maintenance Schedule after you have registered.
It looks very basic (oil & oil filter change), other than that it's all visual inspections (fluid, tire, brake, etc.) and tire rotations (back to front, front to back diagonally).
Regarding transmission fluid - it's a matter of personal opinion. It should last forever but it wouldn't be as good as newer fluid. Some people change it annually, some at certain mileage intervals, some never, it all depends on your preference and driving habits.
