Default Broken Ball Joint / Control arm? (PICTURE)

Hello CL!

I've got a question for your collective genius!

[2nd Gen, 1999 GS400, @ 170K]

So, today I pulled into my driveway and I heard a loud thump. My car was immobilized and any attempt to move it created a painfully loud screech. I looked under my driver-side wheel well and found this: (attached).

Could someone help me identify this part and possibly provide any advice for repair?

It appears to be a control arm but I'm unfamiliar with this sort of thing.

I'm not afraid of doing repairs myself so long as I can be reasonably certain I have enough time and the right parts. I am on an EXTREMELY tight budget and would like to do the repair myself if possible.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the club. Luck you weren't going very fast to cause major damage. Do a search ,Lower ball Joints are very easy to do. You can rent tool to pop them out. Buy Moog balljoint. They are much beefier that stock and you can grease them. You can find a set anywhere on online for under $100. You will need to get an ailgnment afterwards. Btw might as well do Moog outer tierod also. I got the mechanic to throw them on during the alignment .Pay him a few bucks on the side.

I just did mine as preventative maintenance, it wasn't too difficult. Make sure you have a Pitman arm puller. There's a DIY stickied on here.

Replace both left and right sides at the same time. Someone recently posted a very similar thread about their second LBJ breakage because the shop that replaced the first broken one didn't replace the opposite one at the same time.
