Default Radiator fans not working??

Just tracking down the reason for overheating in the car. Changed the radiator cap and the temp stays solid right above halfway mark (is that normal on 98 gs). Checked the fans at idle and they are not moving. Turned on a/c and they both move, but temp stays pegged at right above the halfway mark.

Can someone give me tips on what this could be and how I can check the part.

Thanks!
Mike

your car isn't overheating if it's only a hair above the middle line that's normal as long it doesn't go above 3/4 of the way..just change your thermostat just to be safe and doesn't hurt either

Hey, thanks for the reply. Sorry, I was not very clear, but my car is not necessarily overheating anymore, but I know the fans do not always seem to kick at idle after having driven the car on the interstate for about 15-20 minutes (when parked, idling, and testing to see if fans kick on).

I was trying to see what sensors on the cooling system I should check and then possibly replace. I don't have a service book for this and was wondering if someone could please point me in the right direction.

Also, thanks for letting me know that the coolant needle right above 1/2 is normal on these. Good call on the thermostat...cheap insurance that I'll change this week!

Appreciate it!

Turn on heat to max and rev the engine and maintain rpm to 2000 to 2500k for 15 mins or so, and see if the fan will kick in. If it does, the sensor is working. Also, you can hear when the fans kick in too through the windows. The sensor normally located at the bottom of the radiator tank, driver side. May be some of us here will chip in with more expertise. Good luck.

Halfway temp is normal. You will know if the fan aren't kicking on when they are supposed to. My 99 gs300 suddenly overheated in a McDonald's drive thru. When I got back on the road, I noticed the temp went down a little. I figured out the fan wasn't kicking on when I got home. Replaced the fan switch the next morning, problem solved.

Thanks for the input. Gonna grab a thermostat from the dealership and fan switch!

Thanks for the help! Much appreciated.
