Unidentifiable Part and P0446 Code?
Hello everyone! I've got a few quick questions:
I've been having trouble with the old P0440/P0446 CEL codes, I took my car in to a buddy's shop and he helped me find a few disconnected hoses in my engine bay, after reconnecting them we got rid of the P0440 code.
After more troubleshooting we found this small hose connector was broken. We added a small piece of plastic tubing to the box, shoved it into the hose, and glued it all together. This got rid of my code for about 5 months.
Now, suddenly my code is back. Sometimes it goes away on its own, but I wanted to know what part this was exactly (the big black box) the hose plugs into.
I've tried doing some searching but I can't find exactly what it is.
Thanks in advance!

As a side note, I'm going to go pick up from Gorilla glue to re-seal this hose connection. Is there another type of glue that would recommended instead?
The only part that I can find that looks similar to this is about $350 and I don't feel like spending that kind of money on this thing right now.
Thanks.

Hey bud, these are the code descriptions -
EOBD code: P0446
Fault location: Evaporative emission (EVAP) system, vent control - circuit malfunction
Probable cause: Wiring, EVAP canister purge valve, ECM
EOBD code: P0440
Fault location: Evaporative emission (EVAP) system - malfunction
Probable cause: Hose connection(s), intake leak, EVAP canister purge valve
Hope this helps mate

josephjah, That box is there for a few things, 1) it can act as an initial air reserve for when the throttle is opened quickly (I call it a Gulp Box) 2) it can be designed to reduce noise, 3) It is used in this case also as a ported vacuum connection point. (ported vacuum is prior to the throttle plate, manifold vacuum is post throttle plate).
If you get a CAI (Cold Air Intake) System, this part will be eliminated, the hoses will connect directly to the tube,
and when you accelerate you will have a louder, racier noise.
I am trying to find out why I have a P0446 on my 98 GS400. Anyone know where the Carbon Canister is located?
