Hey they CL crew. I'm new to the forum but not new to the Lexus. I just recently bought a 01 gs300 and previously I owned 2 96 models plus an aristo in that year. Now the 01 I bought had a leaking VVT-I gear, I'm from The Bahamas and parts for these cars are not at all easy to come by and not at all cheap so..... Hears what I did....
1 - Took the VVT-I Gear off the camshaft.
2 - Clean it of all oil or most ( best way you can ok)
3 - On the gear there are 5 bolds and a slot, I took a sharpie and marked the placement of the slot with the inner timing gear. This is for proper assembly.
4 - Remove the 5 bolds and gently lift off the cover.
5 - Remove the old o-ring and clean up all oil from that area. I took the bottom half of the gear with the 0-ring slot to a store that sells transmission gaskets and had them fit any gasket to the slot. ( I ended up with a gasket about 8 inches in diameter but it fits the groove like a glove)
6 - Cut the o-ring in one spot with a razor or something very sharp. you don't want a jagged edge here. Fit the seal into the slot and mark its position when it make a complete ring in the groove then cut it again.
7 - Get a tube of glue and fit the 2 ends of the rubber seal together, carful not to twist it. you want it to be completely smooth all around. ( I used crazy glue and I don't know how long it will last but I figure the inner gear and cap don't move once seated with those 5 bolts so I cant see it separating once seated)
8 - Test it for fitment once your glue is cured. lube the new ring with a bit of oil and fit into the slot. now reassemble the gear. Mine has held up for about a week so far. The jog cost me $4.50 including the glue.
If you need instructions to properly assemble the VVTI-I gear do a search for it here before attempting this.
Best of luck guys. I have more write ups coming.... A lot of gadgets will be installed into this baby.
