Default Power Steering Failure 1998 GS 400

Has anyone had power steering failure for the above car and had it resolve itself? Will this likely occur again?

not helpless. easy to check if you lost power steering. couple of things you can check.

check PS fluid level. if low...
check for PS leaking. ( hoses, pump, rack )
replace/fix faulty part/parts.

Not sure if you've done this already, but check for air in your PS fluid. The way to get rid of or show some bubbles is something like this which I read on a Land Cruiser forum, so forgive me if I am forgetting the exact steps:

1. Remove PS reservoir cap.

2. Turn ignition key ON to unlock the steering wheel but leave car OFF (Or do you need to start car for this to work?)

3. Jack both front tires off ground (or do you not need to?)

4.Turn wheels max left and max right about 5-10 times. Each time you do this, check for tiny bubbles coming up at the reservoir.

5. Repeat step 4 until you see no more bubbles in the fluid.

If your PS is stiffer than you remember and you aren't just imagining it, then it's likely you got air trapped in the fluid within the system which is causing the problem. The above procedure, assuming I have the details about right, should get rid of the air by letting it bubble up through the lines and out the reservoir.

If you've already done this, then sorry, no idea.
