If you can find a low mileage GS430, the difference in price from the 400 is worth it.

Why? What makes it worth $2000 more?

Because the stuff your probably gonna buy for the 400 is already installed in the 430, so in the long run your saving yourself time and buying parts and upgrades.. Just buy whatever you can financially afford right now, sounds like your in a hurry to pull the trigger and want a 430 but not the 430 price...

Because in general it's a better newer version of the 400. Again each car is different in regards to service and condition but I'd pay the premium for a gs I really want since ones in good condition are hard to find despite how many of them are for sale

I have both and loving the difference between the two, one modded and the other smooth stock.. I highly recommend if your going to get a GS, go for a '03 and up GS430..
Did they update the interior quality (material wise) in the 02-05 430's Or is it because they had the perforated leather option...

^^^^This. I would pay more for a GS that has the fixes already completed. I have a 03 GS300 and only brought it because of condition, and the fact it was a SportDesign edition. I would have hands down brought a GS400 or 430 if it had saddle leather as an option.

If a 400 or 430-
-Timing/Waterpump service completed
-Spark plugs, Gaskets (VC.ect)
-Door lock actuators fixed (if not working)
-Front suspension (LCA #2, Ball joints, tie rods)

If all are replaced or fixed and cosmetically the car is in great shape I would pay over book for a GS.

I'm tossed up as I want a V8 coupe but love the reliability/ ease of ownership of a well maintained GS. I don't want to sell my current GS so I may buy another but get a Black/Black GS430. Crazy but for the price you won't find a better used car with the options the GS has.

Let me clarify my previous statement for the OP. If you're set on a V8, then I would pay the extra few thousand dollars or so for a low mileage 430 over a higher mileage but $$$-wise cheaper 400.

In many cases the most expensive car ends up costing the least

Gray is right. You may find a 400 for a few thousand less than a 430 but if it needs any repair or maintenance then you're right about in the same ballpark as the 430 that "potentially" required less maintenance/repair due to age or mileage.
