I currently have 228K on my '98 GS300, from the Lexus records it had its last belt changed aroun d the 150K mark so I intend to change the whole lot (Belt, seals, WP, idlers, gaskets etc) very shortly, I also have a severe rocker cover leak which ill be doing at the same time.

Lots of helpful info on here, thanks for all your efforts guys n girls!

I bought the car from a used car dealer who assured me it was replaced. I had asked because there was no sticker on the motor. I bought it at about 120k miles on the clock. The timing belt belt failed at about 150k. When it was pulled out we noticed it was OEM. I suspected that it was still the original and had never been replaced. Lesson learned.

Finally put everything back together and double, triple, quadruple checked everything. And summoned enough courage to crank the engine...............

woooooohhhoooooooooooooo -- car purrs like a kitten.

Looking back, I think Toyota is very thoughtful when they put those 60 degree before TDC timing marks. If the timing was lined at TDC, I would have definitely got bent valves.

Good to hear you got it all worked out.

As for anyone wondering if it is interference or not. Let me guarantee this for you. I have built and worked on hundreds of these things. The 2JZ-GE VVTi in factory unmodified form is 100% interference, the non believers are free to experiment to see for yourself lol. The next time you need to change the timing belt, remove the belt and crank the engine. See if that results in bent valves or not
