Default New serp belt broke?

Last night my serpentine belt broke driving my gf home, it had been making weird noise the whole day, then the battery light came on, no heat, power steering etc.. The belt was just replaced at lexus less than 10k ago, would this mean my tensioner is bad? Or can extremely cold weather contribute to this. It's been colder than negative 10 for a couple weeks now and I park outside

10k as in x1000 or Kilometers? 10000 miles is a LONG time.. You should have done visual maintenance on the car..
Though snapping a Belt is very difficult it can happen.. Alot of things can contribute. If it was making WEIRD noises why not raise the hood just for a looksy? could have helped to diagnose the cause..

I thought it was just the really cold weather, but probably about 7-8000 miles, just got done in august, probably should have checked it out, it was probably loose

If its making weird noises that should have alerted you that there is something wrong with no belt on spin the tensioner pulley check for any roughness as the bearing my be done also check your harmonic balancer maybe its bad and is slipping this was my problem i kept getting a weird loud noise never suspected it was the tensioner till it came apart on me

Hi, my 98 GS300 has 210000 miles on it and I take good care of it. Two days ago after a 11 h drive, the pulley that provides the tension to the serpentine belt broke - the bearing was worn out without prior warning. The belt was less than 1 year old. As the pully tension wheel broke, the belt was destroyed and of course the car lost all power - luckily the engine did not overheat and I pulled over. Car runs well now after replacing belt and pulley. Lesson learned - replace the pulley tension wheel above 200K.

How much should I be looking at for the pulley?

You should take the tensioner off and see if you can simply replace the bearing and pulley. Mine made a crazy sound for two days before i was able to get it looked at and replaced. I had the dealer do it and it was not cheap... Only to find out had i asked the forum or even searched I would have found out that its not hard to repair without buying a whole replacement.

Or the pick and pulls are always an option for a temporary fix. Word of advice... If your gs is making a new sound find out why because there is always a reason and its usually cheaper to adress it early. Good luck - save a few hundred and knock it out yourself

if you got the work done last august at the dealer, that's within the typical 1year parts warranty, you should at least call the dealer and see if you can get it done for free, or discount; or perhaps at least a free replacement part
