I had the same problem when I changed mine out. The old gaskets were so rotten that it kind of got stuck into the cat flanges. If I would've never bought the new cats, I think it wouldv'e almost been impossible to take out those old gaskets off the cat. My mechanic ended up fitting double gaskets on the post cat flanges and it worked out wonderfully. I think it's safe to keep a pair of backup gaskets. Sucks but it's best that way so whenever an air leak pops up, you can go ahead and get that changed out immediately. Better then having to replace o2s and cats. Keeping the exhaust air leak free is vital to keeping those codes off and keeping the response from the car in tip top shape. And like always, I recommend OEM. I can't imagine how much worse those air leaks would be with cheap aftermarket brands like FelPro and stuff.
