Why not? And can I buy that locally or do I need to order it? Also, how much coolant do I need?

Would I be okay purchasing a remanufactured unit off rockauto or should I shell out for new? Thanks...
Steering rack is like $600 new at lexus, not sure about Sewell with the discount, I'm sure labor is ridiculous, what made them say u need a new rack? Tell them to show u , I don't know about that mechanic man, find another one...

Because that's what came with the car and it is what Toyota/Lexus recommends. You can get it at any Toyota dealer. Two gallons should be enough.

I would not get the work done there. Try and do it yourself it isn't very hard at all.

Perhaps that is why so many people have some many problems with their radiator and water pump ... because they are pouring in that green stuff .
The red Toyota coolant is made specially for aluminum radiators and components . It has inhibitors and protect against corrosion , buildup , etc etc .
I know it is more expensive , but in the long run it will save a lot of money to get the right fluid .
Go to a Toyota dealer and get 2 gallons , then stop by AutoZone and get some flush stuff to clean up the system . Follow the flush instructions , then re-flush everything with water once or twice and then pour in the red coolant ... you are done .

I wanted them to do a 4 wheel alignment because I have to have the steering wheel cocked to the side to go straight. They said that the alignment shop told them they couldn't do the alignment because there is an inch worth of play in the rack and pinon. Also, I got the quote from the shop, and the labor was only $200 or so to install the rack & pinon, and $70 for the alignment.

And is that just the rack or does that include the pinon as well?

Some stuff I feel comfortable doing, others I don't. I've mostly done basic things like oil changes, spark plugs, belts, filters, etc.

I will for sure but read above as well, the alignment shop told them about the rack & pinon.

Thanks I will definitely do that! I wonder though if valvoline's maxlife coolant is roughly the same? I'm a huge maxlife fan, but if the toyota fluid is the only fluid to use I will definitely pick some up.

Thank you all for helping me out!

^ in response to your last comment...NO they are NOT the same. That red Valvoline stuff is meant for the Dex Cool that is used in the GM vehicles. DexCool and the Toyota Red are NOT the same.

Just picked it up from the shop and of course they don't use parts that you personally bought. The receptionist even told me that they mark up the price of the parts... so I'm going to another good shop I've went to before to get a second opinion.

Find another shop . Use ONLY the Toyota red coolant .
<<<<<<The receptionist even told me that they mark up the price of the parts>>>>>>
That is BS .... Order the parts yourself and save a lot of dough , then , when you get the parts , put the parts in the trunk and go find a shop that will install them .
