Default Clunking noise when braking

Hi everyone,

I have a 2001 GS300 with 213K miles.

Recently I had my front two rotors turned and then re-installed. Now when I brake my car shifts to the right, and I hear a clunking noise when I'm almost completely stopped. I checked the driver side caliper and rotor and everything is tight. The caliper opens and closes when I push the brake. However, I have to push the brake pedal in kinda far now (not all the way like I would if the brake master cylinder was broken, but about half way in before it would brake).

Could the clunking noise coming from the front passenger side be the LCA, and how can I tighten it? I have never replaced it, nor touched it. Also, why is my car shifting to the right when I brake? Can anyone please help?

Thanks!!

My guess would be brake pads shifting.
Take your wheel off and check the brake pads are properly seated in the calipers, you might be missed a clip holding the pads in place.

good luck

Thanks Frank!

Which side are you referring to? The driver's side or passenger side? I think the passenger side is braking and the driver side isn't, hence why it shifts to the right. I'll check the brake pads on both sides just to be safe. The clunking noise comes from the passenger side too. Any idea what that could be? Could it be the loose brake pads too? I hope the driver side caliper hasn't gone bad

Could be the pads shifting for sure. I know you said you checked the calipers, but did you tighten the actual caliper mounting bolts to tq spec? I had a clunk coming from the front drivers side on my GS, visually all looked well. I was checking every damn thing. Turned out the caliper bolts worked their way loose. They looked tight, but when I put a wrench to it it was clearly not tightened to spec, solved my issue.

Cool, I'll check the brake pads and rotors again. I'm going to do it tonight and let you guys know. Pep boys turned the rotors off the car for $15/rotor. That beats buying new ones even if it only lasts 6 months to a year. Just my opinion

I think it's a bad caliper... The brake pads were correctly in place and the caliper was on there very tightly. However 1 of the 2 brake pads was worn more than the other. Also, the brake pads would not reset when I let go of the brake. They remained pressed on the rotor to the point where the rotor wouldn't turn by hand. It made a popping sound when I test drove it afterwards too. Still not sure what's causing the popping noise.
