Default oil leak causing miss. & timing question

Back ground on the car.
Bought it from my neighbor it had a cam seal leaking. after a few mins, when the oil leaked down the motor it developed a miss. Not sure what was getting wet to cause the missfire. the guy didn't have tme to mees with it so he sold it to me.

over the weekend, I changed the cam seals (one of them littterally fell out wen I touched it).
I drove the car 15-20 min then it started missing low idle. Then the VTT and VSC light came on.
Auto zone read the code and it was related to the VVT.
I'll check the timing when i get back to it on Wed.

I didn't see or smell any oil leaking out of the cam seals at this point. No puddle under the car so thats a goos sign so far.

Here is my question:
When I removed the timing belt I rotated the crank pulley so that the left of the 2 marks was at 0.
the car pully marks(yellow marks) were at the groves on the backing plate. NOw>>>>
When I set the VVT cam I made sure i turned it clockwise until it didn't turn any more.- Meaning I'd have to turn it counterclock wise if i wanted to move the pulley.
Is that the correct side to set the marks at?

Sorry if I didn't explain it very well. First time messing with setting a VVT motor.

No, that is not the best way to set the timing. Set the timing to the BTDC timing marks not TDC. That would be the right-most timing marks on the cam pulleys (there are two on each pulley) and the crank pulley. One reason for using these marks is if you happen to turn the cams/crank accidentally too much while setting them there is less of a chance of the valves hitting the pistons.

I assume you mean you turned the VVT-i pulley within its adjustable range. You can usually do this by hand. You can still move the cam more clockwise, you just need a wench to do it.

Attached is a video that shows exactly how to set the timing belt on a 2jz engine. It also includes a tip on how to get the slack on the left side of the belt when replacing it so that the tensioner doesn't cause it to jump teeth when it is released. Good luck.
