any difference in road and tire feel between the two?
Well as I've never had aluminum ones I wouldn't know. I'd suppose no because all it does is center the rim at its place, or if it does it's so minor that you wouldn't notice it. I don't know how it could wear out if the ring doesn't move in there. There's not enough heat either for it to melt/deform in any way.
Only way it could get damaged is if you bang it when removing it etc. as someone already said.
i checked Ebay after reading this thread and the aluminum rings are under $20 shipped... This may or not be your issue but for under $20 its worth a try.. I also feel like the slightest bump can take our alignment out of spec very quickly as this has happened in the past.. also make sure that no wheel weights have fallen off...
I didn't think of those wheel weights and I'm pretty sure that I have some missing. I never thought that having some or even all of them missing would cause a problem. Aluminum rings are out of the question because I have not heard good things about them. I'll end up getting another set of the plastic rings and apply some grease or antiseize on the area where it makes contact with the hub.

If your wheels are unbalanced they surely will cause vibration etc. Get them balanced asap!
