Default Low gas warning light problem....

My low gas light came on after driving 190 miles of pure city, stop and go style traffic. I finally went to fill up today at 220 miles and the gas needle touching the black. I figured I'd have at least 16.5-17 gallons but the pump stopped at 15! 220 miles with 15.5(topped off) is like 14 mpg. I thought the light is suppose to come on at around at 15 gallons used and I used 2 gallons after the light which led me to my thought of 16.5-17 gallon fill up. This means the initial warning light came on after 13 gallons were used. That means I had like 5-6 gallons left. Isnt that a little early to come on?

Yup. When mine comes on, I usually put somewhere around 15.5-16 gals in. Don't like to go too low, since the fuel pump depends on the gasoline for cooling. I'd wonder about your sending unit.........but better too soon than too late.

i hate how once the gas light comes on, it is constantly on until you fill up. ok yeah, i sound stupid here, but every other car i've driven (which are all cheaper than the GS) just has a square that lights up orange and goes on and off depending on surface leveling, when the gas is low. that big huge gas light in the gs scares me cuz it seems like something's wrong.
and yes, i've driven 60 miles since the light came on, filled up, and still only filled 17 gallons.

You may see more of these questions if gas prices keep going up, and not just creeping up. In the SF Bay Area, one of the highest in the nation, gas for regular unleaded is going for around $2.10, and premium for $2.30. In SF, its another 10-15 cents higher due to the cost of real estate and high taxes for all the social services. It's getting expensive to fill up these days when the credit card bill comes $40-50 a fillup .

hehe, you are trying to complain to fill up with 40-50 bucks....
In Hong Kong everytime we fill up ours E320, must be more than 80bucks plus we never fill it up around not less than3/4...so it will be like more than 100bucks for full tank

Ok, I feel better now every time I step on the gas. I forgot how expensive fuel was outside of the States, including Canada. And fuel is measured by the liter (around a quart), so you need to multiply that price by 4 to get the price per gallon. Ouch!

Average petrol price in the UK at the moment is £0.73 per litre! That works out to $4.38 per US gallon. Last time I was in the US, instead of taking cheap clothing and electrical goods home, I just filled my suitcase with unleaded!

topping off the gas tank can saturate the vapor-recovery system. at least that's what i was told... maybe someone can expand on this.

I dunno but I was wondering too about this....It freaks me out sometimes because just under 1/4 tank the light goes on...but come to find out there's alot more to go...I would never take chances though!!!...When that light hits time to fill it!!!
