Yep. Same thing happened to me and now when I open the door from the inside, I need to pull the outside handle to get the door to close. That wound spring makes the mechanism do stuff that makes the actuator and lock work as it should. Also, check the door panel to make sure that the cables are tightly attached. I broke my black cable and had to use a paperclip to hold it in place in order for the locks themselves work as they should. Without the paperclip, the lock was funky. Look at my posts, they include a link to the DIY.

Joining the club. I replaced my driver side front lock actuator and now using the key in the key hole does not work. However everything else works normally. I've never used my key in the keyhole in my 5 years of ownership. Only used it when the actuator failed. Something must not be aligned. I noticed on some pictures that the key lock cylinder as a lobe on the end (like a cam lobe). But like you, I'm not sure mechanically who this would lock and unlock the door. I wrote ActuatorsPlus (where I purchased my actuator) if they would have any information to help. I'll pass it along if they provide me any help.

Ok, they were quick to respond. I discovered that I didn't do a step to align the lock cylinder. In the video, around 10 1/2 minutes in, they explain how to do this step. see response below.
Thanks for contacting me. If the the actuator you received is faulty in any way I would be more than happy to exchange it for another unit.
The issue you are detailing sounds like a key rod alignment problem that can be corrected 99% of the time. The problem relates to the circular gear in the bottom corner of the actuator with the cross notches in it. There is a rod with a cross end coming from your door key system that needs to align and fit into this gear on the actuator. f If you are able I would like to try a quick troubleshooting method to see if we can get this corrected. Usually during installation I have to remove the 3 torx screws on the latch. Holding the actuator in one hand I insert the key into the lock and rotate back and forth a few times. When it seats you will hear a click. Other times I have to remove the connecting rod to get it to align properly.
Here is a good instructional video detailing swapping a door lock actuator.
At the 12:00 time mark the installer is having trouble connecting that rod so he has to pull the rod out and shows how to realign it.

Are you working on a GS? This video will give you a general idea, but I think you should research your own set up and not a generic one if your really having that much trouble. Sounds like you didn’t connect one of the rods but that’s just an assumption. If your following the video you may have taken too many things apart and reassembled incorrectly
