Slipping transmission or just how it acts
#16
Ever since ive had my 98 GS400 the way the transmission shifts has always concerned me. Being a car more aimed at luxury I can understand having the shifts being a bit soft and lingering. But then how do you really know if its acting normal or if the transmission is slipping during gear shifts? While it does have 233k its a Toyota, and they last forever if you stay up on the maintenance.
I think it's inherent in the design of this car's transmission.

I wonder if getting a new valve body will fix the feel. Or If I can drop the pan and adjust the shift dial. My biggest worry is that the transmission hasnt had fluid changes at the right interval and its on its way out and money spent on bandaids will be money wasted.

Funny what happens after someone says "not to thread jack".
So I have replaced my driver side motor mount because the engine was jumping around like a a fish out of water. I tried to get to the passenger mount but my issue is that I can get a tool on it but then I cant move the tool. It hits other things in the area. I started a thread asking about it to get some help and i had probably two responses that really didn't help at all.
Some of what I mean is 1-2 shifts that even at partial throttle are slow and the RPMs go up further than they need to. Not that its holding it in gear its like it goes out of 1st, raises PRM, then goes into 2nd. Then at WOT it takes way too long for a 1-2 shift. Even in Power ECT mode.

You can certainly look at the valve body but... from my experience the transmission is in good shape. Fluid was good before I changed it out. I've had to add 1/3 of a liter just now over 10K miles. Just checked it and nice and red, no problems with normal driving.
Mind you mine's an 02 and they definitely aimed for luxury. The "400" on the other hand was meant to be more hard edged compared to the 430.
Have you tried a 3rd gear takeoff? These cars need to shift up pretty quick anyway because of the torque/redline. They ain't Bimmers. You are supposed to have a yogurt smoothy shift with these

My old 98 GS 400 trans behaved similarly and Car still ran solid when i sold it at 300k miles.
Just keep the fluids fresh, Inspect your mounts and change if needed and drive it worry free

I haven't tried a 3rd gear take off. I thought our transmissions would go through the same 1-2-3 shift schedule even if you put it in third. But once in third it will hold it there. I've really noticed the transmission does what it wants to help protect it. I cant shift early in manual mode at WOT. It holds the gear to redline.
