Just joined the club!!
I just bought my first Lex last night 99 GS 400 from a great owner. What a ride into work this morning. It came with a set of 5 Millie Miglia wheels, Borla exhaust, K&N air intake, and strut bar plus included all of the original equiptment this aftermarket equiptment replaced. Lucky me!!!!!
Lexus Navigation, Xenons, with 50k miles for $24k. Had it checked out by Lex who said that I may want to replace ball joints sometime soon....replace drive belt....change diff fluid. The original owner said this wasnt needed. Any thoughts? Should I use Lexus service? Any other thoughts or tips for me?
As soon as I get some pics taken I will post em b/c it looks bad ***.
Thanks,
Jack

Welcome to the Club! Lexus service is definetly the best service out there. Expect to pay a little more than most but receive a lot in return. If the tech's told you that you need it, you probably do. On the other hand, at 60K your going to have a MAJOR service so its up to you as to what you want done. Good Luck!

Yeah, Lex service mentioned that I need to do that major service soon, including changing the diff fluid, change of the drive belt, braking system flush, auto transmission service etc.... is all that really necc. If not what can I omit. I tend to not trust dealers so Im not sure how accurate the maintenance schedule is. Which of the services can I perform myself? Im trying to minimize my out of pocket costs at this point. I got a nice deal but DMV taxes and exorbitant insurance costs take thier toll. Please advise.
And Im in Central NJ, Long Branch to be exact.

WELCOME!
Welcome to the club Jack.
Like you, I'm new here too Been a Lexus owner for over 5 years and been reading this forum from time to time but I finally register here to do some postings lately.
About your new GS, you have to check with the old owner about his previous maintenance. You can also have the dealer do the 60K miles preventative maintenance and.......hmmmm....expect to pay around $800.00 to $1200.00. I just did my 60Kmiles maintenance last week in my LS 400 and after too much argument (in another issue) with the service manager, service advisor& sales manager I ended up paying $500.00 for the whole service plus 4 days RX300 loaner. At first I was quoted over the phone $1200, then someone told me $850 and the service advisor quoted me $789 to add more confusion. To avoid confrontation, I scheduled the car for pick up and delivery so that I don't have to see them face to face in the billing. When the driver brought back my car, he presented me the bill amounting to $1250.39. I check each and every item and found out they changed the gas tank cap without letting me know prior. I did not sign the bill and called the General Manager. We did a three way conference call over the phone, and we settled for the $500.00 which is their actual cost. LOL....lol...
Breakdown: 60K 1993-2000 LS400 labor cost $300.00
total parts 192.05
/tax or envi disposal 8.00
others*internal adjustment -) 000.00
that's the dealers actual cost.
For the quote of 2 other dealers in Houston, the figure isGS400 $813.72 : GS430 $834.05 - Sterling
GS400$1250 :GS430 $1250 -LexClearlake
My GS400 is also due its 60K but one technician told me he can go with me to Toyota parts and he will do the labor half the cost (plus cases of beer of course) at his friends shop. :
How can I save? I let the dealer do the major service 30/60 and pirate their technician on his day off. Believe me, they are friendly when drunk ....LOL....

Jacko,
I think I deleted your private message by accident. Yeah, the figure you quoted was reasonable enough. I don't know how much it would cost you in your region but that is close to the quotes I've got from several dealerships here. Again, check back with the previous owner as to what have been done that way you cannot just say "Go Ahead, DO It" to the dealer.
replace the following:
drive belt
oil/filter
coolant
air filters
spark plugs (for GS/IS) others are @ 90K
brake fluid
auto differential fluid
a/c filter
atf
others are inspection and tire rotation only as well as drive test the vehicle.
In my LS400, they changed both hood shocks for free (thats $196.52)
Front strut bushings wear off, they replaced front strut bar assembly and set toe for free (that's $571.04)
They also ordered a new fusebox cover free because it does not close completely while another dealer wants me to pay for it and I refused.
Just shop around in your area and DON'T Let them intimidate you. If they have a pick up and delivery service (that's a free Lexus service included in the price with a loaner...LOL) then use that service and you intimidate them....Enjoy the ride
