Default Stock h.i.d ballast has a short

Ok since i purchased the gs
everytime the headlight would come on
it would make a "zap" noise
kind of the way a tazer sounds
but the lights would work so i thought it was normal
after a while the bulb went out on the same side with the zap!

Replaced the bulb after 3 months the bulb whent out again.

A friend said that that zap! Wasnt normal and
that it sounded like the ballast had a short and was burning my bulbs..

Is it possible to remove the stock h.i.d's and install aftermaket??
Or fix the ballast?

The zap is one of probably only 2 things. One (the obvious) the wire from the ballast to the bulb may have a slit or something. The other (most likely) the harness that snaps on to the bulb may be faulted. Look at it and see if the tabs that hold on to the bulb arent broken. What most likely is happening is its not snapping on the bulb correctly leaving a gap on the contacts and the zap is the ballast trying to ignite the bulb. This happened with mine. I can tell the previous owner had NO clue how to remove the harness from the bulb and they just pulled out breaking all the tabs on the harness.

yes the gs uses D2 ballasts for stock HID (not AMP)

i'd suggest changing both at the same time for the sake of continuity, and getting digital ones.

I just reread your original post and missed the part about adding aftermarket ballasts. Yes you can do that, thats what I did. Luckily there are only 2 wires going IN to the ballast. Just use a voltage meter and find out which wire is power and which is ground. Note as to not destroy the factory wiring, make sure to get a ballast kit for like 9005 or 9006 bulb because you can use it to tap into the factory harness going to the ballast. All you have to do is break the plastic around the 9006/9005 plug and remove the wires that are in there. The wire ends have flat prongs that will fit perfectly into the factory harness. All you need to do from there is secure them firmly and use electrical tape or heat shrink. If I remember correctly, they do go in pretty firmly. Now if you dont care about slaughtering the factory wiring, well, be creative, I can probably name 6 different ways to do it oh and no need to remove the old ballast (too much work).

As for what to buy, you can buy pretty much any d2r hid conversion kits.

Just took a look at my car
and !!!!! The wiring looks ugly, not professorially done.
The plugs have been cut and has been wired directly from the car to the ballast, (no plugs, straight wire)

im guessing it shoult be even easier for me to replace the ballast
since the plugs are already cut?

I will purchase the h.i.d kit and hope it all turns out good.

Thanx all the help

Ok, then the problem is very simple. If they cut the wires, then the 2 wires arent completely separated from each other. Electrical current has a funny way of bending around corners and making contact with anything they can find, possibly could just be grounding on the body somewhere too. You can just undo and redo what they did, but do it right. If theres enough room to work in there, I'd suggest soldering the wires where they belong and use heat shrink to completely isolate any escaping current.

Or yea, just get a kit. yes it will be much easier, just use butt connectors or even better, solder the wires and heat shrink heat shrink is your friend

I can only imagine the percentage of problems with any car being caused by a previous owner who ghetto rigged something LoL
