Exclamation HELP - Having opposite of hood latch stuck problem - won't catch!

So bizzarre thing. If the hood latch cable broke, the latch should lock and not let go again, right? I have the hood open, and it won't close. The latch moves freely but doesn't lock in the down position. I've sprayed WD40 in hopes that would miraculously fix it, and it did not.

The lever under the steering wheel is stuck in the out position, I can't seem to push the cable back in.

Can't drive home for Christmas till I get this sucker shut! Any ideas?

hi

Did you try to remove the cable from the latch? without the cable you will see if the latch is ok or not (use screwdriver for this)

If it is ok, maybe try to cut the cable about 5-10 inch near the latch, move it near cooler (this will help you to open the hood), later you will replace the cable to new one.

I had similar situation when my cable was broken (but the lever was in close position), I also couldn't close the hood, so I drove 10mph to mechanics.

Hope this help

There is a thread here somewhere about it, seems fairly common - happened to me a couple years ago.

All I did was remove the cable from the latch ( needed to pull the rad support center piece out) and lube the cable sorta like a bicycle cable - no problem since.

I use pliers. With the hood open, go inside & push the lever in flushed. Get up under & take your pliers & grab the cable. Squeeze the cable & push inward until the lever flush. Then the hood will close. Common problem with the latch

Could you visualize this somehow - you lost me at 'get up and under'

the latch under your steering wheel. find the cable, push it into the sleeve while using your pliers.

Take it to a shop and let them do it....

I felt that I gave it a pretty strong push by hand, but I'll give it a try with pliers. Worst I can do is break it more and replace it anyway, I suppose!

Thank you all for the feedback!

The latch I'm talking about is located inside the driver's compartment where the gas tank & trunk latches are. Like I said I'd usually take pliers & squeeze the cable & push it inwards. Once the latch is flushed & not dangling the hood will close
