Default distance after refueling resetting

this isn't too big a deal but i'm curious as to why my 'DISTANCE AFTER REFUELING' data is sometimes resetting back to zero occasionally when I begin driving even though I haven't refueled.

I get this data on the display screen that's integrated into my nav system.

I have a '98 gs 300.

thanks in advance on any feedback.

my guess is that the distance can't never be over 500 mile or something, so even you don't reset it, the counter can only count up to 500 and wrap back to 0, like your trip odometer, same way.

interesting theory but that's not it.

it's been resetting when I start the car it appears even if it's only 100 miles or whatever.

There is a TSB for this that replaces the ENTIRE instrument cluster due to bad embedded software in the fuel gauge!

The dealer will reprogram the new odometer to match the old.

girvan,
he was talking about the distance display in the NAV display, run independent from the instrument cluster.

Yes I know what he was talking about and I know what I am talking about - the fuel gauge software.

That has an algorithm to differentiate from a fuel slosh and a re-fuel and needs new software. The GS has two fuel sensors in two parts of the tank, either side of the axle and gets fooled with sloshing.

The fuel gauge and other instruments collect information and communicate to the trip computer application running in the NAV computer.

I don’t know the number of the TSB but I did see it on the list. I had mine fixed under warranty but it took a lot of persuasion to get a Lexus to admit they had a problem despite the head mechanic telling me that he had seen many cars like this in 1998.

I know that it is off topic, but my experience with Lexus ethics leaves me very unimpressed. They denied having a problem with front wheel vibration, accelerator lag, this fuel problem and numerous other issues only to issue fat TSB’s dated 6 months previously that must have taken months to work on and were probably in progress as the car was released .

that is strange, the only connection from the car to the nav computer is the speed signal, none other that can effect the distance or fuel setting. You are refering to upgrading the NAV software to correct this? if that so, I would agree, or there is a back up battery inside the nav computer that keep the user setting, that may goes bad.

I just double check the nav schematic I have again, there is no other path that allow the fuel setting to get into the NAV computer, I am missing something here.

The distance and mpg is calculated by the nav software, based on the speed signal (ie you know the speed, you know the distance, you know the mpg) Unless lexus intensionally left out some wire on the dealer schematic book, I don't see how the software in the instrument cluster can communicate with the nav computer. going wireless??

I could be wrong, my car is not equipted with NAV, I added it in, but I don't see any component that I am missing based on the nav schematic that I have. And i do get my mph, distance...etc on my NAV now.
I have disconnected the speed signal and disable these setting, so I am pretty sure that these setting come from the speed signal.

here is the GS3 98 TSB,
list out fuel gauge was not display correctly. but that should not effect the NAV.

Also, this is a simplified version of the TSB, if your car is 98, it DOES NOT mean that you are effected by this, just mean that there are a number of people getting these problems, dealer should be aware of the fix. The full version actually tell you what the fix are, and which car/VIN number are being effected.

Banana, thanks for the list. The TSB you highlighted is not the right one. I assume that it is:

EL003-00 APR 00 Distance Since Refueling Display – Inaccurate

Published only 2 years after they found the problem.

Don’t forget that your car has a partially self-healing ring LAN connecting all the major computers - All is not what it seams on these cars. For example, the NAV computer can adjust the mechanics and optics of the CD player and I have reprogrammed my audio DSP through it.
