Default A/C compressor manufacturer

Mine's a 1998 Series 2 GS300 with a burned-out compressor.

Here in the UK the Lexus price for a replacement compressor is around £1,000 (US $1500) which a multiple of what the car is worth. Added to that, the old refrigerant that it uses is outlawed on environmental grounds.

Everything else works great!

Would anyone know who the manufacturer is (Delphi, Denso, etc.) and what their part no. is?

I believe Denso is the original manufacturer, rockauto.com has it for $455 which according to xe.com translates to 293GBP. Comes pre-oiled as well.

Caketown,

Thanks for that, it is most useful to me.

It appears that the part is unavailable in the UK, except from Toyota Lexus at around $ 1500. I will speak with Denso UK to confirm but will probably get it shipped from the US.

No problem, glad you found it useful.

I went with a Denso from Rockauto earlier this year when my original 99 compressor finally died. No problems since the repair. I just looked and it was the $265 one I believe, because I ended up spending three something on the compressor and condenser combined. The local Lexus wanted $600+ for a manufactured compressor I believe.

The factory compressor is made by Denso. I would HIGHLY recommend you replace the condenser with the compressor or it will surely fail again

Thanks to all.

It appears that this compressor is not available as an aftermarket part in the UK - only from Lexus at an outrageous price. I checked this out with Denso UK today.

Clearly the receiver-drier and condenser should be replaced as well (thanks Repugnante). Would anyone have the Denso part number for the condenser?

I'll get moving on importing.

The Lexus dealership should have no problem giving that to you.

This thread below actually got me through the whole process. I did it myself after local shops were quoting me in the thousands for labor. One shop actually turned me away saying the vehicle was too old vs the time/cost it would be to do the repair (they were quoting me to have the dash removed to replace the expansion valve). I decided to just flush the expansion valve instead of replacing it.

I personally wouldn't change out the condenser unless there is something wrong with it. If it's not leaking, flush the system and call it a day (change the drier/receiver of course).

The receiver/drier is part of the condenser assembly. The whole thing is like $80 on Rockauto I believe so it's makes since to just replace the whole thing..

The drier is replaceable by itself. Rockauto has the part for $16. I wouldn't get rid of an original OEM condensor if it's still working, but that's just me.

All noted. Importing the condenser might be an issue because of its bulk. Amazon will ship the compressor and receiver-drier to the UK but not the condenser.

I have a local aircon guy coming round later this week as I have another vehicle (vauxhall Astra Convertable) to be checked out as well. I'll see what he says about the condenser and maybe get a price from Lexus UK.
