I have been trying to figure out how the ASL feature works on the GS.....Anybody have insight into how to really use this thing, or if it even works??

I personally don't think it does much, just turn it on and use it. The way the Automatic
Sound Levelizer (ASL) System is supposed to work is it 'samples' the sound db of the car interior using that little microphone and adjustes the volume up down according to how much noise there is in the car (from windows being down, etc) so that you don't have to constantly fiddle with the volume.
I've never consciously noticed it do anything... but I don't mess around with the volume that much when the windows are down either, so it must be working . I just turn it on and leave it on.

The ASL does work, well at least on my car. I have the ML Nav system and therefore, there is a ASL indicator and when you begin to accelerate, the indicator will go up and so does your volume to compensate the noise generate from the engine and the wind. But like Dave said, I never play around with it.

Is this normal...when I first turn on the radio, the ASL will show no strength. Then five seconds later, it turns on full blast. Is the ASL volume supposed to be a gradual transition, or an all or nothing jump? Interestingly, once it's engaged, the ASL will adjust the volume gradually.
