2002 GS300 clunking when braking
I have a 2002 GS300 with 48K miles. It makes a clunking sound from the front end when braking, but it only makes the sound ONCE per direction change. For example, if I pull into a parking space it will brake with no noise. But when I back out it will clunk once when I stop backing up, and once the first time I put on the brakes going forward. After that it won't make the clunking sound until I back up again.
Lug nuts are tight, brake mounting bolts are tight, can't detect any play in the various joints. Both wheels have done it.
Any suggestions?

I have had this happen a few different times. Each time it was something different. These are the things that resolved the issue on the various different occasions.
1) Check to make sure you have all of the brake pad clips in place.
2) Check caliper mounting bolts are tight.
3) Check upper ball joints for wear.

had the same problem for months with my gs400. it was the front sway bar off center and making contact with a part of the subframe I think. At least that's what the shop said. Fixed and never heard again. hope that helps

I have the same issue with my 02 GS300. Had a mechanic check it out and he figured that it is the brakes. I get the sound when I back out of garage in the morning - first time I apply the brakes....CLUNK. Then after I shift in to drive...the first time I apply the brakes...CLUNK. Seems the brake pads shift. Sound doesn't come again until I apply the brakes again in the opposite direction of travel. He checked all suspension components and everything is fine. Unfortunately he doesn't have a solution.
