Default Difficult Decision

I need advice on my 2nd gen Gs3 my ride has 231k at the moment. I may need to replace the tensioner and thinking of replacing many more things like the timing belt or should i put in a newer 2jz in it. I keeping it for the long run. What would you do?

that's a hell of a budget decision... do i do a timing belt job $3k

Why put in things that is not needed unless it's related to what you are doing?

If it's a timing belt tensioner, I say do the timing belt.
If it's the drive belt tensioner, replace the drive belt.

Well i want to do the timing belt as well as the drive belt and i need to replace the tensioner. I basically want to get the most out of 2jz life wise

Neither job is very difficult really. Can be done in one afternoon. If your timing belt is due replace it, these motors will last well over 300k if maintained.

The drive belt tensioner seems loose to me and it might leaking oil from the seals where the timing belt is

My drive belt tensioner went out at 200k, you can fix that for under $50 and get a new belt and do that at the same time, I wouldn't worry about the timing belt unless you don't know when it was changed or you do know and it's been over 90k ago.

That's a hell of a difference in cost!! If you are just going to keep it stock, I'd go with the timing belt/tensioner replacement (if needed). If you are planning to go for more HP, then I'd buy a used 2JZ short block and build up a turbo setup and then drop that in once ready.

The drive belt Tensioner is a 20 minute job. The timing belt/ seals are a much longer process and you definetly need to be mechanically inclined

Rule#1: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Routine maintenance is ok.

Preventive maintenance is ok.
