Hey guys Do you think swapping knock sensors is a do it yourself project or suggest a mechanic? What should a job like this cost?

Whatever you do use genuine Toyota knock sensors only. From a dealer not from ebay

I can't speak to the level of effort involved because I had mine done at the dealer ($1,506 to be exact). My indy wasn't available at the time so I would say it would have been anywhere from 25-30% cheaper! As others have mentioned, be sure to use the true OEM sensors from Lexus.

First time using eBay supposedly Toyota knock sensor took me 5 hours. Second time with the real knock sensors took me 2 hours. 1500 or 1200 in labor is nuts. They don't call them stealership for nothing. Should be about 300 in labor maybe 500 tops plus 300 to 500 for the two genuine knockers

Default Knock sensor fix? Just use OEM??

I checked the wiring when I was in there and everything seemed fine. Does the 2GS have a separate knock sensor harness that can be replaced? I know other Lexus vehicles do but I couldn't see another connector to isolate the knock sensor harness.

UPDATE, READ BELOW!!!

So from all this reading I did all I have to do to fix my knock sensor code is replace with OEM sensors and tada I'll live happily ever after

Default Not same as posted pics!!

01' gs430... My pins aren't the same as the pictures posted here... Anyone else have this issue??? Help, please!! I realize this is an old thread.. but I've been searching for 3 days, and enduring countless gripes form the wife... Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! I do have that silver box it shows, but my wires def aren't the same.. no clear wire, and not as loaded as the other, there are also about 3-4 plugs on left side of CD changer.. my plugs are white, orange, grey, black.... Not all white like the ones here..... Ugh

my mechanic advised me to ask on here what are other routine replacements I should get parts for, that i might as well do while he is doing the knock sensor / harness replacement - other than basic hose and clamp

Depending on milage and vehicle history, I would look at replacing your starter contacts on your GS400...

cheers

question for you, did performance increase for you when replacing both sensors and harness? I’m dealing with a lot of timing retardation and wondering if my knock sensors are getting old.

Yes, performance is severely cut if you receive a knock sensor code. I remember disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it and that would help for a few miles...but it would return shortly thereafter.
