GS Transmission question
I am new to the Lexus forum community, and this website has been extremely helpful to me. However, I have a question I can not seem to find a post for. I own a 2000 GS400, and my transmission has a bad solenoid. In attempts to fix it... I purchased a 1999 GS300 for parts and to swap the transmissions. I know the Transmissions are the same model A650e but I want to make sure the GS300 transmission will work in my GS400. If so, can anyone tell me what I should look out for? Thanks so much.

Aside from the bell housing, the only difference is that the yoke that connects to the driveshaft is smaller on the GS300's A650E. You'll need to swap the one from the GS400.

The bell housing can be removed from the 400's transmission and swapped with the 300's. The guts of the transmission are identical, so you shouldn't notice anything unusual once they're swapped.

Actually!
The A650E five speed automatic transmission is not the same between the gs300 and gs400 or 430. They will bolt up the same but the valve body has different calibrations. they actually have different part numbers. it has to do with the fact that the v8 puts out more torque so it'll need more line pressure and shift timing. it would be so much easier to just buy a v8 tranny from ebay or LKQ. I know this info. because i bought a gs300 valve body to send off to ipt transmission in new jersey to have recalibrated and than installed in my gs430.

They also have different torque converters, so I've read.

Right because of the different torque numbers and the different rear end gearing. I need the part number because when I look online for a transmission specifically for a gs400 I get all kinds of A650e options but none, out of the probably close to 100 ads and companys and random mechanic shops around me, not one has specified gs300 or 400 and I've seen and heard more times than I can remember that they're interchangeable but thankfully I know that's not the case. I just don't feel like spending 2000+ on a new tranny and get the wrong one.
